Hey Guys

Merry Xmas to all..

I'm planning a couple trips to the Island in 2010 and one of them is going to Ucluelet. I have a 2008 hewescraft searunner 20 footer that is fully load with everything but radar. I'm hopeing to catch some chinooks and hali if there around and need help on dates. I can go in early to mid june or the first week of september. What would be the best time of year for fishing and weather? I have read there is less fog in september? Also how far offshore do I need to go to find Hali and Chinooks? I'm planning on staying at island west resort has anyone stayed there?

Thanks
JAC

Mid june would probably work best if you intend to target halibut as well as springs, because the halbut become pretty scarce by september. South bank is a short run off shore and should provide both. Good luck.

Hey Jordan, if this year is anything like last year early/mid June on the West coast is the ticket. I was there in early June in Bamfield and it was unreal fishing the Coho were thick, multiple doubles every day with the average a smallish 5/7 lbs but an absolute riot with the odd spring mixed in. I was also there in late August and it was good with the fish bigger and more springs but nowhere near the numbers.

Thanks Sean

Are you heading back that way next june? Also what size were the springs that you landed? Were you guys fishing offshore or inshore? Where did you guys stay?

Thanks
Jordan

In June biggest for me was 18, Aug was 29lb. The Seabeam is where we stayed, run out from Port Alberni and stay a few days, there is a communal kitchen and bunkhouse with bathrooms and showers about 12 rooms I think varying from 2-4 people per room, moorage for a fee right out front. Very reasonable in the 25-30 dollar range per night I think. I will be there in June as well as August again this year for about a week each time, there may be some room left for either of the two trips as we book the entire thing with a big group, I'll let you know if you're interested, it starts to get put together in a few months.

JAC...

We did extremely well off Tofino (Ukie was doing well too) on the May long weekend last year. LOTS of springs up to just shy of 30lbs for us....did hear of some north of 30 on other boats. Picked up some nice hali's on the troll too dragging the cannonballs right in the mud. We were catchin' the springers right on bottom.

From all reports that I heard it was one of the best early seasons in years.

It's supposed to be even better this year, especially with the upcoming early Springer run on the Columbia. They are forcasting theit best run since 1938. [:p]

No comparison, June is the only choice I would recommend knowing there will be 475,000 Columbia River Chinook headed down the coast.
