Stuck, really stuck

I have a granddaughter coming over (she's seven) and I will be taking her winter spring fishing. Because of her short arms I have shortened the butt of a trolling rod so that it is comfortable for her. Now the problem, it is an older rod with a metal ferrule that is stuck and I mean stuck. Normally it would not matter, however the guides are not in line, they are missaligned by about 10-15 degrees. Any ideas on how to get it apart would be great.

Put the rod behind your knees, hands tight to the sides of your knees gripping the rod, grip hard and crouch down bending at the knees. Hard to explain, but when your crouch down the fat behind your knees will force your hands apart.


Before you put them together wipe some grease off your forehead and rub the end then stick them together. Ya ya gross I Know. Nobody notices when I do it.

I had the same problem with an Hmx, stuck all summer , tried all the tips and tricks my friends know, didn't work. Went onto a Fly Fish link and hit the answer jack pot! The instructions Made no sense to me but I figured WTF! I put 2 ice packs on the complete ferrel plus 4" either side and let it sit for 20-30 min. Took it outside and it just popped apart easy peezy.

If you can get it in the freezer or wrap it in a towel full of ice cubes for 1/2hr it should do the trick

That makes sense re: the cool temperature.

Would cause the molecules to slow and the metal to contract and allow you to move it.

mine didn't have metal Ferrel so it one piece trophy rod now... I tried everything...

My HMX didn't have any metal ferrel. Nor does my Trophy, Like you I tried everything. Then did the blue ice pac wrap for 30 min and it came apart real easy. I read that you should never twist it!!

Tried the ice trick last night-- no joy. Will keep at it today, with penetrating fluid and then ice again.

Don't use penetrating oil, apparently it creates suction

This happened to me a few years ago and one of the members here advised me to put the rod in the freezer.
I laid the rod across my chest freezer, closed the lid and put a sleeping bag over it.
1 hour later it came apart no problem.

Well I got it apart. It did not go as planned though. The rod is in two pieces, but the ferrule is still in one piece. When I used a little heat, the ferrule came off the rod on the handle end, so I did the same with the tip end. I think I just melted the glue, so now l need a new ferrule. I will check here in CR but If l find nothing here does anyone know where I can get one between here and Nanaimo.

Sorry about the rod. I would think that Tyee Marine in Campbell River would have a Richmake Ferrule. They sold enough of them. At least they might point you in the right direction. Good Luck. eman

Gungadin , I would suggest that you take the rod down to River Sportsman in Campbell River, they can put a fibreglass ferrule on it for you. I had one done three years ago and it came out perfect. Not cheap mind you and it may take awhile but well worth doing because you will never find a replacement as good as the original rod. By the way guides of my era used to hang the stuck Richmakes in the walk in freezer overnight usually after an attempt or two they would eventually come apart.
