Subject: FN0243-Recreational: Invertebrates - Recreational Prawn and Shrimp By Trap.
Recreational Prawn and Shrimp by Trap Fishers are advised effective 00:01 hours
May 01, until midnight May 07, 2007 the harvest of prawns and shrimp by trap,
ring net, or spear while diving, will close in the following Subareas:
1. Subareas 17-5, 17-6, 17-7, and 17-9 (Stuart Channel and Ladysmith Harbour).
2. Subareas 19-7 to 19-12 (Saanich Inlet).
3. Subareas 23-1 to 23-3 (Alberni Inlet – Anticipatory to be confirmed by
Fishery Notice April 23 following the SFAB Mainboard meeting)
Subareas are described in the Pacific Fishery Management Area Regulations.
Variation Order Number 2007 -113.
Note:
The South Coast recreational fisher and commercial prawn fisher representatives
have met a number of times in recent years to address the interests of each
group and to explore a means of maintaining and/or increasing prawn stock
abundance in high use areas. This is the second year of this management action
for Saanich Inlet and Stuart Channel which has been approved by the main Sport
Fish Advisory Board (SFAB) and the Prawn Commercial Caucus as a first step to
try to increase stocks in these high use areas. It is expected that Alberni
Inlet area will be included in this management strategy as well in 2007. The
purpose of the recreational closure in these three areas for the period of
00:01 hours May 01 to 23:59 hours May 07, 2007 is to allow comprehensive
spawner index sampling to occur throughout the area.
A “Pulse Fishing†schedule of roughly two weeks on, two weeks off is also
expected to occur in all three areas commencing September 04/07. This schedule
of closures and openings will be confirmed by fishery notice in August.
