Stinger or no stinger?

I usually fish port hardy area and inside winter harbor for springs and chinook with bait.
I run salted anchovies and teaser heads and typically a single treble.

Every now and then I will check bait and notice a short strike but do well regardless. I like the single treble and figure that my hook up percentage is higher than with an octopus, I also like the clean rig and spin I get from the treble.

That said I hate the thought of missing a tyee due to a short strike almost as much as I hate the thought of injuring a smaller or releasable fish due to a errant stinger in the gills.

My question is what do you use with a teaser head and do you find a higher mortality with stingers.

Cheers,
Mike

I used to use a stinger-got tired of them breaking off in the net. I just use a single treble( 2) now. I'm happy with it. Been back and forth from double singles to treble and stinger-now I'm at the treble and factoring all the trade-offs-pro and con-I like where I'm at-What you're comfortable with I guess. All the big springs seem to be tongue hooked-smaller usually lip hooked.

I switched to a single treble a couple of years ago and never looked back, no noticeable reduction in hook ups. As spring fever noted the little piece of line between the tandem setup always gets frayed and will break, so you have to keep re-tying. Just keep that single treble razor sharp and you'll be fine and save yourself some work - same for hootchies, no need for tandem hooks.

Tried the stinger (single beak), killed a few smaller springs and coho with the stinger catching the gill plate/gills, quite the stinger. Of course there is no small springs in Hardy.......

Usually fish a #1 single treble, trying Owner hooks this year.

Curious as to what size of hook people run???

Hey Ken I'm using gamagatsu 3x and 4x in #2's and 3's I believe. Cabelas here in Edmonton had a wicked deal on a few months back and I picked up a couple 25 packs for 8 bucks each.

I think I will stick with the single treble as we seem to do pretty good as is and since we always like to send a few back when the fishing is good!!:)

I concur with Poppaswiss and - no need for a stinger...I have fished Nootka for years and normally used a treble and a single stinger but last year or two had to work longer to get fish than everyone else in our party (4 boats)....turns out that no one else was using a stinger anymore and they got more hits and lost few fish if any. Naturally i dropped the stinger and things vastly improved. So, my point is that a treble and no stinger is just as effective and it probably results in more strikes...at least in my case.

Ive used everything from two single, two trebles, one treble with single stinger. I found that its just way easier to use one treble. Mustad 3X for me, but I wouldnt be oppose to switching up as they do rust after a few times out on the chuck

I use a number 2 treble and a single 4/0 gammy octupus stinger....I was having issues with the small piece of line between the 2 hooks getting cut and fraid easily so what i do is connect the treble to the single stinger with 80lb tuff line and then run my 30lb leader to the treble hook. Have yet to see the braided line between the two break. I think you can see Rhys davis or some other company has some pre-tied setups like this with the braided line. At least I have seen them at Harbour Chandler in Nanaimo.

#2 treble...no stinger...since switching a couple years ago I have noticed a great increase in retention rate.

gonna try a 6/0 single octopus gammi in my sockeye squirts this year
