R.S. There are special split ring pliers available, I have two pairs, one on my boat and one in the tackle room in my basement. Don't buy the cheap version you will curse them after a short time. Walmart sells a decent pair that look much like a standard pair of needle nose pliers, except they have the specials end to open and hold open split rings, they also have a short cord on the pliers. I believe they are less than $20 - worth it over the cheap pairs.

I just use a large siwash hook. Hooks are always on the top shelf of my tackle box, they always slide in easy and open the ring enough to attach to another hook/lure as needed. No need add even more heavy gear/tools to my tackle box & boat.
