So they are Chinooks, but its below the equator (and border) so it's a King..lol

I brought this up on a recent chat with Noggin'. I thought salmon, specifically chinook were only found in the northern hemisphere. I know there are other types of sea salmon (new zealand sea salmon for example) but I always thought they were a northern hemisphere fish...

A little research later (as I had seen a show about fishing Kings in Patagonia (argentina/chile) and I came up with this...

The proof is in the pudding I guess...

It surprised Noggin, so I'm sure it will surprise a few others!

There are several youtube videos detailing this fishery...pretty cool!

There is a guy on an other board that fishes them down in NZ.... They use funny gear

Those ones in Patagonia are farm escapees that have residualized from what I have heard

I've seen them Kite fishing for them in NZ...thats pretty funny! Must have been a lot of escapees to create a run of salmon no? Pretty interesting if that is the case...of the fish I've seen caught in patagonia (youtube, other shows) they are just MASSIVE fish. 40+ lbers...

Well it is the farming industry in Chile :D Pretty un regulated.

I am not sure if there were Spring there until the farms showed up? I could be wrong though.

Found this after a quick google

Wild populations of King (chinook) salmon now exist in Chile and Argentina. Apparently escaped fish from hatchery and aquaculture operations have established themselves and may even support a wild salmon fishery there.
