Sooke Reports - Spring and Summer 2012

ha, good story tigerprawn. Did the same thing once in Renfrew on the beach, fishing on a friend's boat, about 15 minutes of high speed donuts, trying to stay on top of him, so that he couldn't surface ... idea being, if he needs air, he'll eventually let go. But in the end, he surfaced right by prop, cut the mainline, and that was it ... still, a lot more fun than just cutting the line right off the bat. :-)

Today. My friend and I fished from Possession Point to North Secretary Island for 5 hours. We caught 4 hatchery cohos and we released 3 wild cohos and one sockeye. No Springs :( before the water become rough. We went to the Indian Marina. We saw a lot of fishermen caught nice size springs and cohos. It was amazing in the morning!

Started early, couple hits, nice Wild Coho, couple of Hatch Hos, one 15Lbs white, scratchy at best, all fish at 90 , spring on a Chrome Yellow Green, water got lumpy about 9, Hatch Coho had a 6 inch Herring in it, Good Day Driller

"The Indian Marina" that won't get you an invite to the next potluck...

Windy, rolly, weedy and Hoey, everything was shallow, except the ocean

The best time was when the derby guys went in :D

Was off Possession Point this morning and it looked to be slow for springs. Our first was a nice hatchery coho. I was just baiting up and about to send it back down and the the other rod took off. I passed off the rod to a buddy from Nitinat Hatchery and felt like a nice fish. It took a nice run and I set the boat in neutral and I saw the fish make a roll and went down again. It started to screem out line and you know what I was thinking dam Seal. I was not about to loose my gear so I stayed on it. It popped up with the fish 18lber and down again. I stayed on him and he came up again. This went on for about twenty minutes and finally he came up beside the boat with its back to us let go the fish. I grabbed the net and got the fish and all my gear.

So if you got the time don't give up, it can pay off. The fish was it good shape and the only marks were on the tail. The best fight all year.:o

Good going on the seal. The last two times we have been sealed we lost the salmon and the flasher and as per the post a couple of days ago, had a seal up close only to have it take the line into the kicker prop and wrap it up good. The smaller seals are a little easier to win the battle with.

Was out yesterday early from the new public dock. Figured we'd get there early to beat the 'zoo',so showed up at 4:30.
Already 5 guys lined up,so don't get to Otter till near 6:00. Drop the gear and troll up the beach to the lighthouse.
Several wild hoes before we finally get a hatch job about 10+ lbs. Didn't see too much happening,so kept it pointing
west till we got to Point No Point. Still no "Spring Lovin'" ,and a bit of a chop building from the SE. Not a good place to
be,especially on an apposing flood tide,so do a 180 and pound it all the way back home.Saw the whales come through
and that was it for the fish.7 wild hoes,2 hatch jobs and a sh@#load of shakers. All in all a good day,but didn't even
see 1 spring caught in all those miles of water.

Didn't have a morning trip but hit Otter Pt at 1pm and ended up with an 18 and a 13 by 5pm. Had a couple more on as well. Heard the morning was slow so glad to get a sleep in and not miss much. Water was decent with maybe a 1 to 2 foot chop.

Just don't say that at the marina....i think you are joking :)

Actually I am not joking, I am serious and I did not know about that... I can not spelling for the name . Can you suggest me to use the right word.

I think your private message is full.

hhmmm at 23 posts your giving advice on how to catch salmon and you cant spell the name of that certain marina and you call it "shack tap" not to bang on you bud but seems kinda weird but hey im just calling what i think so keep helping .........personally i have my doubts

as for a report yes its a bit slow last couple of days but from what ive heard so is renny and Vic on either side of us hopefully with these big floods coming its going to push us some more fish down or its cgoing to be and early end....

Good luck Wolf

How about a fish report? Was out on Saturday and had 5 hits. Two missed the hooks the other three that popped the pin were all low teens. Saw a few others caught but nothing big.

According to Wiki:-

50% of native Americans like being referred to as American Indians.

In Canada:- the legal term by the government for a reservation is :- Indian Reserve.

We also have an "Indian Register"

and ...a Minister of Indian Affairs.

You may not call me Honky,Cracker,Snowflake,Flatlander,Newfie or Redneck, Cheesehead, Canuck, Stubblejumper,or Cabbagehead.....or I'll have to sue.

You may not call me a "white" person, as that is color specific and biased.

You can call me Caucasion........but don't call me late for dinner.

Addicted :-......are you kidding?.......50% of everything posted on any thread on this site is not relative to the topic of that thread. Or it's just meaningless banter or chit-chat.

Comes with the territory.....

Out this afternoon for a few hours. Targeting springs. For most part no go. A few shakers between 75 - 115 feet. WTF. What the H are they doing there going after cuttlefish hoochies down there? Another coho keeper:-(

better then we did b55. two shakers two jacks. saw two nets out with decent springs or big coho and one guy at the dock with a heavy tote. tried to stay outta the pack so may have been alot more, lots of boats out today. id go west.

Out yesterday and picked up a couple of smaller Chinook. One was a mid teens white off of the outside Secretary reef at 110 feet in 140 feet on a bloody nose and a modified Pink Haze Flasher. Everyone else was fishing the Front and Possession so we had the reef to ourselves and were able to fish up and down the reef rather than across. The other one was on a red silver chrome at 70 feet off Possession. Observed some others caught but most were also smaller Chinook or Coho caught up higher.

Also picked up a Chicken dragging gravel deep off the bluffs looking for Chinook on the red/silver chrome, non salted chovey and Pink Haze. Not a bad fight on salmon gear with some good runs and at least Halibut are still open.

Going up to Campbell River tomorrow for a few guided tide changes in the Tyee pool rowboat fishery.
