This is my first time on here, and i would be interested to know why the d.f.o has shut down halibut off sooke.Myself and two buddies were anchored off sooke the last 2 days of legal halibut fishing and we had the time of our lives. We took 12 nice ones averaging 25lbs.It does not appear to be fished out by any stretch of the imagination! These were better fish than i caught at the bank last summer.Cheers and good luck.

It doesnt have to do with how good the fishing is ... all its about is quota. DFO projected that sport fishers took more than their quota this year to date which is why its being shut down now.

The more i dig and learn the sicker i get to my stomache, this should get some serious attention by whatever means necessary. We are going to be up the crek very soon. The question is this, do you fight it until your blue in the face? Or do you just sell off now and start golfing? Sees as though our hands are tied up tight on this one. I know of a few boats up for sale already, sad stuff[V]

Playing the devil's advocate. Based on this statement, it appears as though the stocks are currently healthy. Do we wait until the stocks aren't healthy before there are closures?

Even though the fishermen don't need a rest, perhaps the fish stocks do to keep </u> them healthy.

With DFO, we holler a them when they close a fishery which seems healthy and we holler at them when a fishery has been wiped out from over fishing. Seems like a no win to me. :(

No Kildonan; we complain when DFO allows openenings (commercials or sporties) when they should be closed to protect the stocks (west coast seiners, gillnetters, or opening coho in the Cowichan Bay now with reduced size limit...) and we complain when DFO closes when there is no or unjustified reason (such as unfair quota share for halibut, closing winter spings in Sooke (90% US hatchery fish) to protect early Fraser springs, and other idiotic things...). Very few here would complain about a justified closure of endangered stocks. I did not see anybody complaining when river mouths were closed for salmon fishing to protect specific returning stocks. Very few complained about rock fish protection measures that were well overdue... The big complaints are where complaints are due and the complaints should become a lot louder to have any impact.

I propose that we all boycott the creel survey from now on and tell those folks that it is nothing personal but they please pass on the message to DFO that the sporties will not provide free data anymore until DFO finds an acceptable solution to the halibut quota share issue. This is one of the few favours that DFO asks of us and here we could make a statement. Granted, this can only be a little side kick among other efforts we have to do. One of them being showing up at the next SFAB meeting.

Who sells their boat when the fishing is closed for a couple of months? Or are these charter guys that are just fed up?
