Sooke 2013 Fishing Reports

nice fish discus!

I think it would make me madder saying something and having someone play dumb.

Can your girlfriend argue!? :o lol Its pretty intimidating to say something to a bunch of burly half cut fisherman. They might laugh in her face, that what happened to me. Dont let that discourage her tho! Definitely feels good standing up for what you believe in. :)

There are also a few very prominent guides who are catching and keeping over 85cm springs and then either lying when asked where they caught it or they run up to Sheringham after landing the fish to make a story less contestable. I just shake my head...these are the same guys who do sh&t when it comes to helping either with fish/habitat work or with the fights we have as sport fishermen dealing with restrictions. They have never set aside a Sunday afternoon and volunteered their knowledge and boat for the Pink Salmon Festival, don't spend $40 to support those fighting for their rights to fish, don't show up to SFAB meeting unless their fishing expectations are threatened...... they do nothing except use and abuse. I have distanced myself from all of these individuals, don't have much time for them anymore.

Good on you gear n beer. I've been using the cleaning table we made a while back. I don't see the cleaning table, I just pull my boat out and go. I can't stand hanging around seeing what guys are cleaning, it bugs me!

We were out with our son and a friend of his, 7 and 8 years old, from 8:30-1 today from Beechy to the shack and back. Started great, lots of action unitl 11 - many coho and pinks to the boat, way too many shook off at the boat (gotta work on that), boys had a blast! We also got great experience identifying the fish. Profishers tips the other day came in handy, instead of focusing on the tails as I've done previously, focused on the mouths first. Had one hard hit on a red spoon at 90', and it was a fighter. Got the large spring up to the boat, he kicked away with a few head shakes, and was gone. We had a quick look at it, consoled ourselves by thinking that it was probably over the 85 and we'd have had to release him anyway. :-) Disappointing to hear about others cheating, taking illegal fish - as new fishers, my fam is working to educate ourselves, identifying legal fish etc.

Beauty day on the water though, a little choppy as others have reported in some areas, but final count was 3 pink, one hatch coho for us. Good size pinks too.

good work Adler, you sound like you know more than a lot of people already.

Another tip for the pinks is the tiny scales, they are way smaller than coho or jack springs, if they trash everywhere most likely coho, pinks seem to dive their nose down.

I usually clean fish when it gets slow while fishing too but it got pretty lumpy and fishing never did slow down!!

I think with the lack of DFO around we need to police ourselves, make the people feel stupid so the next time the go the cleaning station they will think twice about what they are bringing....turning a blind eye and not pointing out the obvious just keeps them doing what they are doing.

I only use my net for springs, all these coho get either gaff released, or gaffed into the boat.

Was out yesturday kept 2 hatch cohos and 1 pink for the smoker, most action for us was around muir, didnt carch any springs unfortunetly, still a fun day out on the water

Cheers

Was out with my daughter yesterday ( she runs her side of the boat) ,I put an apex on a trout rod in the prop wash probally hit 12 coho on that rig . She managed a 12 lb spring and lots of pinks coho to the boat. Saw a few wild coho at the cleaning table ,2 guys who were not newbies were filleting there coho. Maybe some large signs at the cleaning tables would help. Identification of fish,Regs, fines?

Fished Friday on my own, no springs for me off of Possession, coho fishing was great about 1 in 10 was hatchery. Went out again on Saturday released an 89 cm fished and lost about a 10 lb spring at the boat. Did not get any hatchery coho on Saturday. There was a DFO guy at the launch in Sooke checking peoples catches which was good to see. We had only one pink to show for all our efforts. Fished from 4:30am to 9:00 am.

Had a great day yesterday morning. Caught four species of salmon (released the sockeye and wild coho's of course). Lots of action, great for first time fishers.

Only downside was it looks like a lot of people our netting small fish, only to release them again. People need to learn how to release non-retension fish without netting them, or bringing them in the boat which greatly reduces survival after release.

If DFO insists on more and more restrictions that require catch and release then maybe they can help out by instructing people how to better release fish!

AWESOME day once again with happy people going home..1 -15 lb spring (lost 2) and then it shut right down??? if the fog back and forth wondering to my self WTH???? then couldn't keep the pinks and hos off???then I hear about what went past us!!!! about 30+ orcas!!!!!Fog clears So ask my clients if they want to see whales EYES wide open now!!!!

So OFF we go see them just shy of secretary move into position had alot come by us and one even breached for my people, THEY WERE STOKED!!! they have never seen wild Orcas so this made there trip on the way back stop to lift crab trap and they left with 4 beauty dungys for dinner to go with there fresh fish.

This truly is stellar fishing off of sooke right now WOW..

GET out there better yet take a kid fishing as well....

Good luck Wolf

Fished yesterday with my 3 year old son, my buddy and his 5 year old son.
Fished Otter for a while with only a couple of coho to show then headed for deeper water and found non stop action in front of the bluffs. Mostly pinks with a few hos mixed in.
Kids had a blast. First Salmon for my son reeled in on his own.
They kept 5 fish, released and lost a ton.

Also I had launched out of Sunny Shores and on the way back we pulled the boat in to the dock at "The Stickleback Restaurant" for lunch. It is just past Sunny Shores with a small private dock. You are able to pull in and dock there while you are eating at the restaurant. Great food, great service and topped the day off.

awesome report Tips, Good to see the shorter fisher dudes slaying them! I often wondered about that dock at stickleback, I will have to check it out :)

Owners name is Scott. He runs a kayak company off the dock and leases a spot to a charter boat but will accomodate where he can.

It takes a brave man to put an islander in the hands of a toddler. Woops, sorry dad!

Looks like a great day. I can't wait to get the kids out but I think the islanders will stay at home that day!

Those big smiles on the kids are what it's all about. We ended up with a mix of 8 coho and pinks at the trap and let 1 spring go that measured out at 95 cm at low slack. Felt bad as he had swallowed the spoon down to his tonsils and tho I tried to be careful removing the hook, he was already bleeding like a stuck pig. Probably whale food by now.
It was a great day to be on the water.

Out Sunday and quickly got our limited of clipped HO’s in no time. There are so many out there it is hard to get the gear down once you get on them. Also got 4 large pinks and they seem to be here in force now. In the afternoon the tides pushed them inshore and we hit some really big (for this time of year) Ho’s off Possession. In fact at one point my buddies rod just slams off, pounds and is burning line down deep while he palms it and he thinks it’s a good Chinook and I am thinking it looks like it also although I am playing a double header and releasing a nice Ho while bringing up gear while he plays his fish. It’s way out the back of the boat and there is a boat coming up behind us while he’s playing a big Chinook, so I wave off the boat behind us but when he gets control of it, it is obviously a bigger Coho not a big Chinook so I felt a little sheepish for waving the guy off.
