Something different for 2025

I have been working on a new spoon profile since November 2023. I started about a month after aquiring all the assets to the PEETZ Brand. I don't have a name for it yet. It is not a knockoff, or a copy of any other brand product. It does have some characteristics similar to the TKO trolling spoon that I co-develped with PNT many moons ago. But still different.

Yes, it is made Here in Victoria, BC. We have been testing since July, and I am very pleased by the results. Color patterns may change, while some will stay the coarse. They don't bend very easily, as they are fairly durable overall, probably to a fault in that I will more than likely sell less, while the angler can have years of enjoyment catching fish with them.

Anyway. Thought y'all might like a bit of a teaser.

Man if you could make those in cop car glow like a the second one in a durable finish that would be amazing! I picked these two PEETZ classics up the other day I’m excited to try out IMG_3152.jpeg

Nope, won't happen with that lure. That was a licensed product that the previous owners had exclusive marketing rights for. When the company closed and all assets were sold, the license became null and void. I worked at aquiring a continued license agreement, but in the end decided to let go of the opportunity as I would not have manufacturing control. He makes an amazing product and I believe he will venture out on his own and be very successful in all that he does if he decides to ramp up.

There is a small amount of that product range in my inventory.

*Edit,

I misread. Yes that color combo is in the plan.

Sometimes less is more. These worked out really well this season for Chinook and coho. I had a good cross-section of local Vancouver Island anglers working them over for me. The best part of it all, I was excited to learn that my specs held out. No bent or mangled spoons reported. I am looking forward to giving them a go now for winter Chinook and maybe try some trout in areas that don’t get iced over this winter.

And no, clearly when these spoons are in your hands, you will know that they are not knock offs, duplicates or any other type of copy. They are original and designed by me and made from my tooling on my presses at PEETZ in Victoria BC.

Stay tuned...

How bout a hook that doesn’t rust first time out.
Is that a complaint, a statement, a question, or a request?

Regardless, I ONLY use top brand hooks. There are benefits to using hicarbon hooks at times over stainless. I use both personally. I don't buy garbage and won't sell garbage.

Sorry, not a complaint about Peetz. Just a general comment. It just seems everything I buy with a hook on it starts rusting the first day I use it. I’d prefer to pay more and change less hooks.

I couldn't agree more!! I would rather pay a bit more then mess around with rusty hook changes on new gear

Have you inspected your boat output voltage. Your zincs could be an indicator of high voltage. As a side note whether you but stainless hooks or high carbon, because of dissimilar metals in all the components that make up a lure, of which various grades of stainless could also be affected. Full front and back painted or coated spoons will have less electrolysis, where half painted will have some affect and full metal will have full effect. Especially 50/50 plated. On 50/50 to minimize the effect on the spoon use blued or high carbon hooks to slow blade deterioration. In that combination the hook becomes sacrificial.

Sometimes you want the heat on your blade, this can be effective if you run braid Downrigger line. There is so much more science behind the electrical field and how it effects your fishing. This website has lots of threads on the topic from over the years. As does a 1970's paper done at UBC about how it effects commercial trolling and a good book called Fishing With Electricity.

Do you use a dunk tank? It makes a difference. I run the PNT hook that works well with ss cable for using the electric field, no heavy protective coating, and they go a few months as a sport fisherman. In the tank and sloshing around until back at the dock.

Why not sell these without hooks if it’s so important to anglers to have a certain hooks on their lures. I personally change the hooks on everything. Saves you time and money as Canadian labor isn’t that cheap nor are hooks. The only person left confused or upset by this would be the angler that’s still buying pre-tied leaders and hoochies.

Probably a wise idea, of which myself and others have discussed while rolling through the process of building out our gear.

It will become even more pertinent when the new hook regulations are implemented requiring 3/0 single barbless hook as a maximum allowed while targeting salmon. They will also ban the use of treble hooks while targeting salmon.

DFO will not only change the way you angle for salmon, they will now affect the big business of lure making. TOMIC Plugs for instance, imagine a 3/0 hook on a 7 inch plug. Swim Baits for salmon will need to be reconfigured, many spoons will now be less effective in the lager sizes because many spoon Designs are built out with the hook size incorporated into the balance of its action. All of your salmon jigs with no trebles, which is better anyway but it will now affect manufacturers existng bulk hook inventory. PEETZ is a small company and I have close to 100,000 hooks in various sizes and styles on my shelves.

Hmm 🤔

Hi Rob,
at this point it is my understand the dept. is considering the following for the up and coming season and haven't seen a 3/0 hk size regulation. If the dept.. was considering the follow it would be a 15mm gaping as we know that not all 3/0 hooks are the same regarding that.
Your local SFAC should have all the information available.
More then happy to share the Hook and mort study and the latest up date.
cheers :)

4) Not included in the regional recreational update letter but also for early consideration is a tidal water gear-restriction where only single barbless hooks maybe be used for salmon fishing (no treble hooks permitted) in times/areas of Chinook non-retention and in some areas open as pure MSFs (no unmarked Chinook retention). For example, in April and May where there is a pure MSF (waters around Victoria, BC), DFO is considering changing the regulation to single barbless hooks (prohibiting treble hooks). Rationale for consideration is that only hatchery-marked Chinook of legal fork length may be retained and all unmarked (or sublegal) Chinook must be released along with any Coho that may be present. All other salmon species are also non-retention in this time/area, although unlikely encountered. DFO is also considering prohibiting treble hooks in June and July, although hatchery Coho retention is open is most areas, to further reduced the impacts on Chinook as a result of release injuries. DFO will provide more information at a later date as this new topic is developed for further discussion.

Thanks for expanding the dialog. I actually misread my notes. Its a good study, however in the end of it all businesses need time to adjust and hopefully DFO puts out a big campaign well in advance. Well, unless of coarse they simply want to harm businesses and individuals. Again I appreciate the expanded dialog, I re-read my notes and fully can see the recommendation.

Sure hope they open the season up. I'd be happy to give up trebles and, taking photos of fish and then releasing, probably the two leading causes of mortality, in exchange for more retention opportunities.
