Today was the birthday of one of my friends and fishing partners.. The gentleman we refer to as the " Ancient Mariner " turned 89 years old today! Ralph Shaw -- Order of Canada recipient . So what does he do on this momentous day???? he shows up at the trout pond at Courtenay Fish and Game to volunteer his services . Here is a short profile from a few years ago http://www.islandtimesmagazine.ca/a.../fishing/fish-philosophy-from-the-finest.html .... I am happy to say, nothing has changed. He is still intensely active in conservation issues, especially where water, and fish and game are involved. I have learned a lot from this man about treading lightly on this earth and how to appreciate the bounty of our fish and wildlife resources.

As soon as I am finished with the Fathers day Fishing-- I have a fishing date with Ralph that I am very much looking forward to

Please pass on congrats, happy birthday, and thank yous to Ralph.
Haven't had the pleasure of meeting him myself, but I think my well thumbed copy of his fly book is a first edition from the 70's (?).
Lucky you, fishing with a legend.
Now, where was that thread about taking the "elderly" fishing - just kidding.

I believe the words, " World Famous" apply to Ralph.
Happy belated Birthday.

All of the above, first class guy and example of a true steward of the resource. Happy B Day Ralph.
