sockeye fishing in port alberni

I assume that the gauntlet(in the sound) is made up of mostly gill netters hitting all the choke points. I was wondering with all the small springs in the sound (many of them mirroring the bigger sox for size.) what is the by-catch ratio and what is being done with them.
Are the gillers keeping them ? The bag fleet in the inlet has a no retention on them.I know it is far less likely to get into any up inlet but the guys in the sound are in the mix. Not wanting to start another rant on this I am just wondering how it works?

Ray, I have been thinking the same thing. I have been told in the past, that they go over board as they are not allowed to retain them. (Now I would love to be educated otherwise if this is not true). Because of this, I have always questioned DFO's acceptance of the use of the gill nets out in the sound, when they know full well that they are going to kill some by catch besides just the sockeye that they are going after.

alberni sockeye

Hello... I would appreciate any reports on the fshing today. china creek area thanx in advance.. C.A.

Was slow all weekend, the odd boat would hit one, and every now and then someone would be fortunate (or have a good enough sounder LOL) to drop gear in/on a school.

Talked to lady doing creel survey at Clutesi at about 9am, she said that virtually no sox have been coming in for days now.

Talked to my buddy gill netting on the port side of China Creek and he said "It's slower than slow". What a horrible sockeye year.

Between that many bags in the water, and the near constant FN pounding of the river, methinks you might want to change your statement to: "What a horrible year to be a sockeye"!! Expect escapement numbers to plummet as these openings continue. Also strong suspicion the run will be "upgraded" once again, to allow for next week's shenanigans...:(

Nog

What are the escapement numbers for 2012 so far?

Sucks to be any early chinook swimming up the inlet too in that case nog lol.

I was hoping to be proven wrong but indeed DFO doesn't give a crap and soon will be the end of PA sox and springs. :(

Im amazed the runs of Sockeye keep showing up yr after yr with how its so poorly managed. I have definately noticed the Chinook decline here over the yrs. 25 yrs ago you didnt have to go to Pill Point or Offshore. Lone Tree was fine. Its a flippin crime what were doing.

Talked to lady doing creel survey at Clutesi at about 9am, she said that virtually no sox have been coming in for days now.

We spent several hours out between the Sproat Narrows and Stamp Narrows Sunday Jul 8th, and didn't catch anything but a couple of jellyfish. We watched the commercial opening just out of curiosity (never seen them work up close), and they weren't bringing up much if anything. They'd drop, then pull up and move.

I was starting to get frustrated until I heard everyone else getting little or nothing. Now I just feel like one of the guys... :(

why don't you try going up the river to snag a few,,just like the others are doing,,dfo is no where in sight,,seems pretty simple to me,,although i would never do anything illegal like that,,not my bag,,i always keep it legal,,
the guys in the river are taking their 4 home then comming back for 4 more,,then etc.,etc., seems like the only ones getting there sox are the illegals,,way to go dfo,,keep up the good work

rook 2 are you for real?
Perhaps you could take it down a notch and reread your posts before you hit the submit button.
You are comming across as a nomind and I'm sure you don't want that.....

So all the sport fishermen are poachers....
Because some break the rules everyone should also break them too.
Blame DFO for the lack of moral fiber in the sport fishing community?
I find it hard to believe that there is wide spread corruption in our fishing community.
I don't live in PA but I can tell you that this sort of behavior would not be tolerated here.
Way to many of us on the Puntledge river would have something to say if we saw this.

If this is case (keeping more than 4 per day) we have bigger problems then DFO can address.
GLG

i agree dfo is lacking these days , BUT , it is what it is ,

I'd be more pissed at the poachers !
we have ta stop bitchin about it , get out there and say somthing to them ,
we need to police our resource where we can, dont need ta come out swingin ,
let em know that you seen them earlier that day , Whats up dude ?? make em feel like chit..

ive done it on the fraser , most guys standing beside would step up if they had too ,

no one likes poachers..

hell , Ive went up to orientals ilegally fishing crabs at cates park , grabbed there cooler full of undersized crab ,
through the whole cooler in the water ( no joke ) thought i was gonna get stabbed by the li prix lol,,

picked up the phone pretended to call the police , they ran like illegal immigrantz lol..

just me i guess
