Alien Snakehead fish in BC Waters???

If this species gets established in BC a lot of wild fish are going to suffer along with some sport fisheries.

You see these things live on display in some ethnic restaurants and aquarium stores. Governments need to ban the import of these monsters immediately. The largest of them can grow to 66 lbs; that is a lot of trout and bass needed as food.

When people get tired of the pets they have an emotional attachment too and feel guilty for buying in the first place, they like to convince themselves that a ‘Free Willie’ moment is justified to return the fish or bunny to nature by setting it free.

This is especially so if parents feel guilty and do not want to upset their children by killing something that should not exist here. So they take the kid and let the fish go and feel good.

The problem is that BC is not the nature these monster fish were intended to live in.

Whenever this alien Snakehead species gets established out of their own habitat it is not good for native fish. They actually crawl on land to colonize new lakes and waterways at night when it’s cool. They can move from ditch to ditch to storm water runoff pipes, to streams, to ponds, rivers and lakes.

I've fished for snakehead in Asia. Have caught them on anything from worm and bobber to top water frog imitations and poppers.

Anybody know if fishing in Central park lagoon is allowed? Want to help with their eradication:)

Rotenone the lagoon now, don't wait.

asians like to eat those things so they release them in local ponds in the hopes of catching them when theres lots of them therethey have been caught doing this in usa,the snakehead is not a home aquarium fish its an expensiveasian delicacy

Asians like their snakeheads for dinner...........but that doesn't explain other species like carp, yellow perch, bass etc. that are finding their way into Island lakes (Elk lake for one).
Heard pike are starting to show up too.........

Who brings all these species in and puts them in island lakes?

They've been selling live snakeheads in van for some time now......it's a done deal that some of them are going to end up in our water systems.

Create the opportunity and someone will take advantage of it.

Don't know about the other species but trout, small mouth bass and sun fish have been in Elk and Beaver lake for at least 50 years. Caught them all as a kid.

In they news last night they said they would be back at it this morning, and that fisheries would be doing their part of the work on Friday morning. It appears that the snakehead is not the only foreign species in that pond as it also hods plenty of koi and turtles, and they want to get rid of all of them.

I actually watched a 1hr show about the Snakehead but in the states basically they eat anything and everything plus they are escape artists. A guy had 6 in a huge tank and one jumped out of the smallest hole in the cage at the top at night when no one was around, he had a camera rolling and within minutes the rest jumped out the same hole! Thats nuts that fish would figure that out, plus they can travel on land like a previous poster said. Another reason why they are imported is Asians use them as a spiritual healing. A guy came forward in the us as he bought one for his ailing Grandmother but before he could give it to her she passed away s he released it in a swamp of all places, then it killed everything in the swamp. Basically they only way that they said to kill them is to either electric shock a whole area or some kind of poison, which unfortunately both ways kills everything.

perhaps a tagging , registering system , put in place on all imported creatures ,
when a moron does somthing stupid like this , when caught or found , the registered owner could be contacted ,
dealt with accordingly , or does this make to much sense !

or just ban any imports that can cause harm to our eco system , period...to many irresponsible people out there,,

glad they found it , i HATE snakes....
