Anyone know of a good smoke house in the Campbell River/Comox Valley/Qualicum area.
Not:
St. Jeans
Portuguese Joe's
Aquatec
CR Seafoods

There was a great little place in Qualicum but it is now closed. The place on Hwy.4 just outside of Coombs is no longer taking custom orders.

Have used them last 2 years. Bring in your frozen slabs and pick them up all done and vacuumed packed. I had jerky, candy, lox and regular smoking done and was impressed each time. They also smoke all the the fish for Save On Foods. I think it averaged out to about 2.50lb -3.00lb

Unlike St Jeans they fillet everything by hand as SJ does it by machine

This is not directed at any one shop. Just a list of what I have seen come back from certain ones.

But,I will start with distroyed fish. Seen some of the rudest stuff come back from them. The wrong stuff come back from them. The wrong flavors/coatings. Rotten/smelly fish come back. Fish comming back light, way to light. Oh and some of the most unclean shops that should have been reported to the health inspector. I even recived cemical burns to the inside of my mouth from fish recived back from one place. This being why I normally do my fish my self. I hope to find someone that is good at what they do. Can you help CL?

They no longer do smoking:( I just called. So Homer you 2 will be looking for a new place to have your smoking done. I am sure this is the same place that I was talking about in Qualicum.

Been using Campbell River Seafood since 1987. 15 years of guiding and taking my guests fish there, never had a bad fish, hot smoke, lox and candied, all good. Sorry if you trouble,...BB

I am looking for somebody different. Other then them 4 places. Glad to hear you like CR Seafoods. There are people who like all four of them places. I will PM you and tell you what happened to me there. AS I am not trying to slam or put a ad out there for anyone. Just wondering if there is some small guy out there I am missing.

Cheers,

A number of years ago, (10?) a friend of mine picked up some very nice smoked Salmon from a shop in (or near) Bowser. I believe that they did the smoking on site. Don't know the name, but if they are still there, should be easy to track down.

He had some Indian Candy, and some Cajun that was out of this world. I don't liked to be overwhelmed with heat and the Cajun was very flavorful without too much heat. The IC, I could eat all night long - great stuff.

Anyone got a clue if this place is still around, and if so, where it is?

Jim, The place is right on the waterfront highway going through Bowser. As I remember it could have been called Coast Island Seafood so I think it might be the one commented on above. I had great results there but that wasa long time ago.

When did the place in Coombs stop taking custom orders?
Scott

Smokemaster I think it was called has a sign in the window and the front door is locked. They must of stopped this year as we used them last year and the candy was great.

Steve at the Smokery in Coombs is just too busy to take rec fishing orders. Great guy and great product, but he has a steady client base and simply can't take any more...thus the sign on the door that they are not accepting sport caught fish currently. Will likely change once they get more staff.

I called..One must be rich in order to use these guys to smoke your candy for ya. $5 a pound, plus $1 a pound for vac. baging. At $6 a 30 pounder will cost $180 plus tax. OUCH. It is done within 7 days though and must be picked up within 2 days of it being finished as they do not have a freezer.

I almost tied you guys last year but it was a hassle. You had no freezer. Fish had to be picked up right away when it was done. And the prices were thru the roof in the end. I would only hope the prices have come down and that you will be able to freeze my fish for a week or so till I can drive back up island to pick my fish up.

I am only in Courtenay. But I will not drive there the next day to pick my fish up. I might be on the water.

I had a couple of Tyee's to have smoked last season and when they were done they would have been $100 a fish to have smoked. At that price I would buy a Bradley and do it my self. Maybe you should think about a price buy weight. So a guy with 50 pound get a better price then a guy with only 10-20 pounds.

Don't get me wrong I really wanted to give you guys a try. But other smoke houses offer better price the more you bring them.

By the way does anyone have the Name of the smoke house in Merville/Black Creek.
