Slime Eels

How do you avoid these slimy *&%$*?

I've been using tin cat food and it seems like I get at least one everytime (Barkley Sound).

Do they (eels) prefer a certain type of area (drop-offs, sand flats, mud flats)?

They much prefer mud and sand flats(in my experience) but,sadly,they can be taken anywhere.

I used to get lots of the pesky critters when I was fishing Dependable sports traps(small mesh) but I have switched to the larger mesh commercial traps and I seem to miss my little friends. They get out when you start to retrieve. (I think)

I can't believe the amount of snot these little guys have!! We dont catch'em on ECVI as much but on the WCVI they are a for sure catch. What I normally do is keep the trap half in the water, and shift my prawns to one side of the net.Then I open up the bottom of the trap and let those dirty,slimmy,snot slinging little B#@%^*^'s out. It's been working for me.
