Subject: FN1146-RECREATIONAL - Shellfish - Prawn and Shrimp - Areas 13, 16, 17, 23, 25, 28 closures and Areas 17, 19, 23 "pulse fishing" continues



Recreational Prawn and Shrimp by Trap Fishers are advised that the harvest of

prawns and shrimp by trap, ring net, or spear while diving, will close from

00:01 hours January 1, 2013, to 23:59 hours March 31, 2013, in the following

Subareas as described in the Pacific Fishery Management Area

Regulations:



1. Subareas 13-1, 13-13, 13-16 and 13-17 (Quadra Island area);

2. Subareas 16-1, 16-5, 16-7 to 16-11 and 16-18 (Malaspina Strait, lower Jervis

Inlet, Salmon and Narrows Inlets, portions of Sechelt Inlet);

3. Subareas 17-5, 17-6 and 17-9 (Stuart Channel);

4. Subareas 23-1 (portion of Alberni Inlet);

5. Subareas 25-1, 25-3, 25-4, 25-5 and 25-16 (head of Tahsis Inlet, portion of

Muchalat Inlet and Tlupana Inlet); and,

6. Subareas 28-1 and 28-5 (portions of Howe Sound)



These closures are based on the results of prawn spawner index testing

conducted in October and November in the vicinities of Quadra Island, Powell

River, Madeira Park, Salmon/Sechelt Inlets, Stuart Channel, Nanaimo, Saanich

Inlet, Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound, Tahsis-Gold River, and Howe Sound. No

additional winter closures are pending as a result of the testing.



Recreational Prawn and Shrimp by Trap fishers are also advised that the harvest

of prawns and shrimp by trap, ring net, or spear while diving, will

continue “pulse fishing” in the following areas:



1. Subareas 19-7 to 19-12 inclusive (Saanich Inlet); and

2. Subareas 23-2 and 23-3 (portion Alberni Canal).



These areas will be closed for the following periods:



- from 00:01 hours December 1, 2012 until 23:59 hours December 15, 2012;

- from 00:01 hours January 1, 2013 until 23:59 hours January 15, 2013;

- from 00:01 hours February 1, 2013 until 23:59 hours February 15, 2013; and

- from 00:01 hours March 1, 2013 until 23:59 hours March 15, 2013.



Subareas 19-7 to 19-12 inclusive, and Subareas 23-2 and 23-3 open 00:01 hours

March 16, 2013 until further notice.



Recreational prawn fishing in all other coastal areas remains open until

further notice.



Variation Order Number 2012-472. Variation Order Number 2012-307 is revoked.



These actions are in accordance with the Recreational Harvest Plan, Appendix 2

of the 2012-13 Prawn and Shrimp by Trap Integrated Fishery Management Plan.

information on daily bag, possession and trap limits.

know this usually happens this time of year anyways. Again,thanks!
 
have to make sure the commies have something to catch in May and the F/N can harvest all winter long.
 
Anyone know what they watch for in sPawner index testing? Are they closing if there are too many spawners or are they closing if there are not enough spawners?

My last trip out I got all small-med spot prawns not one with eggs. Is that a bad sign? Last year at this time there were not tons with eggs but we certainly got some.
