Shimano TLD

Humpbubble, yes those are the ones I use,725 Alvey, dead simple.I hated the wobble of the big TLD's I had.The handles can be held when fish is running and 1 way drag is smooth.Their much nicer than Peetz,no handle banging for the inexperienced guys and your not fighting the drag pulling in.

Awesome much apreciated.i fish with a bud who has the larger version.bit big, could pull a prawn trap!
Looking at alvey USA..

We've got two TLD20 in our boat, and I own a TLD15. Personally I'm note a huge fan of them as I find the line ends up stacked in the middle of the rod, sure you can use your finger to guide it but I've been cut enough with braid. I prefer Star Drag reels and have a few Shimano Tekota reels which are phenomenal.

barrie,"avets," interesting,I have been looking at them in Trotac, they looked skookum and their prices seemed reasonable...any reviews?

Run a pair of TLD 25's I got at a righteous price or I probably would have gone with the 20's. They are the old made in Japan units and with replacement handles they have been great for two years. Had them serviced when I bought them. Capable of more drag then you may need. At 11 lbs drag at strike, I wore a hole in the mouth of a 25 lb hali that was scary. My ignorance showing as I didn't back off the drag after the hook-up. Line winding hasn't been an issue.

Avets seem nice but they will put a bigger hole in your wallet.

Sammy,
I do run the 2 speed Avets. They are the soooooo smooth! I cheated on Tro Tac and Bought the first one up at HC in Naniamo and then 2 weeks later got the other from TT here. This is year 21/2 and no problems at all. Probably jinxed myself now. I was running Penn 2 speeds prior to the Avets and went thru 5 in 2 years, took both Penns back and Paul upgraded me to the second Avet. I've run lots of off-shore manufactured Hali levelwinds over the years, all needed servicing by Mike up in Schooner Cove after one years use. The Only other level wind that worked as well as the Avet are the Smaller Abu Garcia that I use to use for jigging, they were made in Sweden. Had them for 14 years and never had to service. I think you will be really happy with Avet. I know there will be opinions on other reels that guys think are better, but these work for me and I've spent a **** load of money on reels over the years.

I sold my Penns and TLD's and replaced them with the Rapala Benthos. Sweet lever drag reel and the hi / low speed retrieve is a nice feature. They are also available in left or right hand retrieve. Searun has been using them for 3 years on his charter boat, no maintenance required.

Where did you purchase from EL. Can't find an online seller or a dealer list on the Rapala website?

Tks

The TLD 20's have been the staple for mant rec sturgeon people....but now being "replaced" by the Penn Squalls!

I have abused tow Avets when they first came out as a favor to the company...great reels, great size in the two speed model!

I personally run Penn Internationals as my dino reels, yup they are bigger, but so smooth on the long runs, hot or cold. This is were a lot of reels fail, IMHO, is once heated and the drags get sticky.... equals lots of lost fish. I have run my Penns for 4+ years now with no service yet.

Switched to old peetz reels this year from level winds. Had them serviced at peetz and respooled for under $80. Reels were $20 garage sale. I love em. Fun. A bit tricky, but if you can't handle them you don't deserve to fish on my boat

Good call, I used those 25 years ago and should have stayed with those instead of looking for the easier winding Hali reel. Sometimes newer isn't always better.

Agree 100%. We moved to the Rapala Benthos 2 speed lever drag reels last season for Albacore TUNA. The guys like them so well they used them for halibut too.
They were fished Hard all season with no maintenance issues. Gear Ratio 6.2 & 3.3, Machined Aluminum Frame & Spool, Huge handle on wobble smooooooth.
