Shimano TLD

Hi Scott, I have a TLD 20. For the money IMO it is a great reel. Tough, easy to use, time tested, reliable. Once you get used to a thumb lever drag for hali you won't want to go back to a star drag as it is quick and easy to use. I would recommend a TLD 15 as the 20 is bigger and heavier and like any larger reel can make the rod wobble side to side when reeling up.

I had 3 for many years, always reliable,no problems ever.I had TLD 25's and agree the bigger they are the more wobble you get.I now run Alvey 7" one way drag that I imported for about $220,no more wobble, very satisfied.Halibut only reels.

At the sportsman show in Abbotsford last weekend I was looking for a conventional-style reel as well. Looked at the TLD, ended up that I bought a Penn Squall 40 (Lever Drag of course!) For a great deal over the TLD. New design, very good reviews thus far and I got a killer price.

The price between the 40 and the 50 size was 10$, but for ease of casting and handling I went with the smaller 40 size. (Wobble like WITW said - A real pain when pulling up a fish).

Really recommend taking a look at those, I think the drag is a bit more modern and felt really smooth compared to the TLD, similar, even cheaper price as well! TLD is a time tested design, could use some updates squall certainly fits the bill!
Heck, thing even comes with magnetic cast control. Could pull double duty for small-medium sturgeon in off season I am thinking :)

I have one as a back up for sturgeon and its solid, needs a longer handle/better knob though to make it more comfortable to reel..

Just a hot hali spot that saves fuel! You know the one. Lol. I will look for it tonight,(hopefully I didn't turf) it might need servicing. I think its got line on it too. If you need another, I think the Wild Child has some he wanted to sell. Gotta tell Ya, I've had 4 and all mine were high maintenance. Where as Ken no trouble. I will drop off at the new building for Ya this week. I'm running 2 speed Avets now . My story: penn 330 to Shimano to pen 2speeds to Avet 2 speed. Yup 16 hali reels in total bought over time. Should have bought 4 really good reels in the beginning. Apparently being thrifty don't work

I hear ya, I'm running a Penn 330 right now.
I don't like the star drag much. lever drag's much better
Thanks Buddy !

Sorry to hijack.but rayvon, is this the alvey?(725) I was thinking of ordering myself one..as i've fished 4 old penns since the late 80's,and they are falling apart.pretty good lifespan id say!
But have "moved on" to a 6" peetz and love it.we have boated 4 barely legal hali's in the last few outings all on the peetz:) only problem is for noobies wanting to rest,or cross over to hoist the rod with their right arm, a bit tricky with little drag or free spool.

Again,apologies.
Level winds are great too;) especially if ya got lil baby hands.heheh
Speaking of which..anyone have a handline setup?

Funny you should mention this Scott. I was tossing around the idea of getting a lever drag and was looking for a TLD, but couldn't pass up a deal on a Penn GLS 25 lever drag. My first lever drag. Hope to test it soonish.
