Shimano Reel Recall

I sent back my 4000 GT reel for the drag recall as it wouldn't hold when hooked up to the downrigger (kept creeping out). Now it holds drag , but doesn't seem to like to release when I lessen the drag ?

anyone else have this problem ?

rediculous ...

I know someone with these...they were sent them back to Ontario (where the warranty centre is now) and they had the upgraded washers put it. Work like a charm now! :)

I am assuming this is the newer version that was out in the last year or so?

yea I got it last summer, used it once, realized it was F*ed, called island outfitters and they said there was a recall and they sent it back to shimano, I got it back a month later, and it held drag so i figured it was good. Then when i took it out fishing the other day I noticed it doesn't want to let go once you've had the drag on tight. it seems like the drag just doesn't lighten up ?

i really don't want to have to send it back again... anyone have any ideas of what it might be ?

Check the drag washers are lubed lightly-I like Super Lube.

Also-if you're going to send it anywhere send it to Shimano in California. They are the official repair depot now that reels are no longer serviced in BC.FWIW-I have had some shockingly poor service from Shimano's Ontario office but I'm not sure if it's an official repair depot now or just an agent like we used to have here.

The California Shimano office opens up @ 06:00 hrs Pacific time BTW-not always easy to get through on the phone but once you have someone you'll be looked after.

Why would you have to send the whole reel away? Why couldnt you just get the new drag washers? Even if a person had to buy it, they cant be that much? I guess what Im getting at is- is it worth if to have your reel sent away for god knows how long over a drag washer worth maybe a couple of dollars?

Might be more than the washers.

agreed DB... I dont call myself a reel expert and dont really want to screw up a newish reel... that is working (just not 100%) but I also don't want to get a lunker that snaps me off because the drag cant get loosened off properly..

When I looked at the schematics of the reel there are like 3-5 washers and it looked like only one of them was called the drag washer ? do they all get greased ? are they greased so they they separate when the drag is lightened ? I have reel grease and im sure I could grease them up myself but im not 100% sure thats the problem, might just be an adjustment problem ...
