SFAB meeting / petition??

As far as I know only the local SFAB meetings are open for public attendance to listen, but not participate. The sub area committee meetings and main board meetings are not open to public. I was at one time involved directly on the main board, so things may have changed in the ten years since I have participated, but I would suggest that before folks attend they may want to check out the ground rules.

Dunno about all the local SFACs but the one I am on does listen to those who show up. But the Terms Of Reference, which are set by the Main Board of the SFAB, only allows those representing a constituency ( guides, angling groups like the local Rod and Gun, flyfishing clubs enhancement groups, independant anglers etc) to actually vote. If the process turns into a bitchfest, it will lose effectiveness

But yes-- you will be heard.

there is a good reason for these rules. The Sport Fish Advisory Board is the Official AdvisoryGroup representing anglers that advises the Minister. It is NOT supposed to a lobby group. The lobbying part is better left to the individual groups and individuals. The line does get crossed every now and then, but it is generally agreed that it is better to separate the two functions.

Tx Cuba. Yes things may work differently at the local SFAC committee level in terms of listening to input, but you are correct the rules will only allow reps to vote. As for the SFAB process I think that attendance is by invite only. My sense from some comments on this topic was there was an expectation people could just show up, express their views and then have a say/vote in the recommendations advanced to the SFAB Main Board Table. It just doesn't work that way, nor can it. There needs to be some process for limiting discussion to sector reps who are supposed to come prepared to represent the views of their specific sectors. If you want to do some lobbying, perhaps it is more appropriate to talk to your area rep and make your views known, or better get directly involved in a local sector group such as SFI, BCFDF, BCWF etc. There is more power in working in a group than trying to effect change as an individual.

Just to set the record straight this was sent to me in corraspondence from C. bos pretty plain to me for us to attend

Hi Roy,

Yup, you got it, the anger level is definitely on the rise due to the restrictive salmon management and the halibut allocation fisasco.

True, there is a meeting scheduled for Tuesday November 18th at 7:00 PM. DFO will be there. And fishermen are welcome to attend this meeting. I will send you a location confirmation and an agenda when they're ready.

One question I will ask today at the meeting in Tasis is due to the fact the information at these meetings is important to ALL anglers these meetings should be video taped and open for public viewing.

Cheers ME

What time of day does your local SFAC meet?... Are these meetings scheduled on the weekends or in the evenings so people who work for a living as most do, attend?

I think the comments you are referring to are in regards to the timing of SFAC meetings so anglers or for that matter the Canadian public can expect to attend these meetings at a reasonable time and place. Not to vote, but just to be able to sit in and listen and be informed of the goings on. This CANNOT happen if these meeting continue to be held during business (working mans) hours. How many working folk will sacrifice a days wages, espesially during these tough economic times, to attend SFAC meeting scheduled in this way. It is supposed to be a process that works for ALL and not just those who are able to attend.......

Sitting around the same table on and off for five or so years, I can probable count on one hand (maybe two) the number of persons who have showed up be heard locally. I attributre this mainly to the timing of the meetings. Many I have spoken with would love to attend but not mid morning, during working hours....
