From time to time I see folks asking "what kind of plant is this?".
There is a free app that quickly identifies most plants (and animals etc) which I was introduced to by a co-worker a couple years ago now.
It is called Seek. I have used it a lot, and found it to be very accurate. It has only failed once in the 2 years I have been using it.
They constantly update their data base and it now houses more than 80,000 types of plants.

Here is the link:

The usual caveat here: I am in no way affiliated with the company that offers this, simply a rather satisfied user of this particular app.
Kind of like a public service announcement for any with an interest.

Great app. Use it frequently.

We moved into a new home a few years ago and the home had a large established garden of flowers, shrubs and bushes as well as trees, bushes and hedges around the property. I had no idea what the plants were or how to prune them.

I used Seek to identify all the plants and sketched a map of the garden so wouldn’t forget what was where. Then I went a step further and Googled all the plants to learn how/when to prune them and I created a pruning calendar by season.

So yeah, Seek is great!

Another great app is Merlin for identifying birds by their calls. Takes up a lot of memory (7GB) but so worthwhile. I now know that the delightful twitter we hear on our deck is from a dark eyed junco and the owl calling at night is a barred owl.
