So im running the stock No. 350 Rodmaster ll rod holder that comes with the downrigger. i been thinking about swooping out with the No. 470 Rocket Launcher. any you have pros and cons i should be looking at.

I have the bottom one on my Scotty high powers, works well. It's a bit tough on some rods with weak buts. I've broken the cork off the bottom of a couple shimano convergences. Other rods with tougher butts have been fine.

Just remember that the end of the holder will now be another 4-5 inches out from the boat, so you will have to reach further, lean further, and that might pose as a safety issue.

Those rod holders exert a lot of pressure on the connecton point, where they are bolted together, much more then the stock ones. On the Stbd side this is not so bad, as the pressure is toward the connection and keeps them tight together. A different story on the port side however as the pressure tends to pull the connection apart. I have had one connector break with the rod going over the side (recovered from the deep blue by raising the weight and finding the downrigger clip still attached) and one crack, both on the port side. I converted the port downrigger so that the holder is on the foward side, like the starboard side, but wont use those holders when in a strong flow or fishing deep.l find they are best when they are facing toward the stern, and use them when fishing two rods off one rigger

The only Scotty Rod Holder I would trust with expensive top end gear is the later model Striker, The one where the base pin is reinforced with a stainless rod, not the earlier model that is hollow with no stainless rod inside it. All my other Scotty rod holders are used only with the cheaper gear, (Shimano 4000's etc. - the stuff I don't sweat if the base pin mount breaks off and the rod and reel go overboard). In my experience, because of the length (extra leverage) the Scotty rocket launcher type rod holders break off more than their others.

I have replaced the boom mounted tube type rod holders that came with my High Speed Riggers with very high end, high quality, solid, extra heavy duty all stainless rod holders. They are very expensive ($110 plus tax each) and they have to be modified by being drilled and tapped and a recessed set bolt installed. One of my fishing buddies is a good machinist, so that was no problem. They install with four heavy duty Allen Head bolts plus the set bolt so they can't turn on the boom no matter how much force is applied and they come with a special tool to adjust the ratchet angle. I am pretty confident I would break the Scotty Rigger mounts off or tear a fair bit of fiberglass out of the side of the boat before one of these rod holders would break and deep six the gear.

Keep in mind they are heavier than plastic and add a little weight to the rigger.

That model is not the same as what I installed although it looks similar if a little smaller. I looked into them and they adjust the ratchet angle differently, I believe you have to take them apart to do it and they do not come with the special quick adjustment tool. They also have a much less robust mount, only two bolts and are less heavy duty. The one I looked at had a smaller mount and may be more suitable on the older one inch diameter booms not the newer inch and a quarter type Scotty booms. You get what you pay for. Given where things are going with our dollar etc. I was willing to go with the better unit and buy locally.

I really like my Scotty Orcas. Had them 2 years now and would not go back to a rod holder. Way easier on the back as they sit much closer into the boat.

I agree with the Orcas although I read the earlier ones might have issues. I am a bit paranoid so I bought a few 6' coil stainless steel tethers for my rods that I clip onto my rods and other end to the downriggers. Also good for when there are novice anglers on board ☺. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=56668&cat=1,42207

The older model orcas, such as those in your picture, have tendancy to open up under pressure. This happens because in use pressure is exerted upward on the back section and can cause the holder to open. To open them in rod retrieval when a fish hits, you pull straight up on the rod to open it up. The newer models (those without the white ring on the top front section) do not open like that. You need to lift up on the rod at the front section first to open them. Pressure on the rear section only will not open the holder. Much better design, and l now feel confident in using them on my riggers.

The new orcas are the best mounted on the boom with an extension and tilted inboard so they lean on the rigger lid. You just have to get used to lifting up at the front to make them open properly. Never hurts to use a safety tether.

Caution with Scotty's, they can break off. I had that issue this summer only to watch the rod unload the torque and go for a ride into the ocean only to pull it up still on the clip. $850.00 rod and reel, that woulda been nice!
Went straight to Scotty, they said the bases are a maintenance part and need to be changed every 2nd year if your guiding. That's what Scotty tells the guides but no mention to Joe fisherman!! Not cool Scotty!!
I also will be changing every 2nd year and I don't guide. Cheap insurance I'd say!!

No need for anything new and fancy, sidewinders have been around for years, never read in any post of one "breaking", old fashion as well, do not like the reach to get at the rod when its bouncing. Good bracket on inside gunnel, some for hali= no riggers and another set further back for salmon and rigger use.

Rockfish Where did you get your holders from? I have now broken 2 of the plastic Scotties and a change is needed. thanks
