i am in the market for a couple new downriggers and was wondering what kind of experiences you guys have had with the hp riggers? i have heard of many lost ball's and the occasional breakdown. any input would be great. keep in mind that i can get them for about a $60 difference.

thanks

I used the old style for ten years, couple lost balls, used the hp's for one season 5 lost balls, snubbers and quick releases(60 bucks a shot)! But the hps are fast smooth and quiet.

I'm going to be jumping into the electric downrigger market for the first time this year and after my research, talking with a bunch of buddies, and using 1106's on their boats. thats what i'm going with! Cheers

I have the old one's and they are plenty fast enough for me. Since I switched to power pro 200 lb from ss cable no more lost cannon balls.

If you fish often in deep water 250 ft the HP are worth it but if you mostly fish 60 ft they might not be the worth the extra money. Yup you can go through a lot of lead until you dial in your system on the HP's. Do a search on this forum for methods to hook up your cannon balls. I would also think that guides would like the features of the HP's. back lite digital line counter and speed. They also handle a 20 lb cannon ball with is nice we in current and down deep. The HP's do have some problems but all in all they are nice. Best bang for the buck to the average angler would be the older style IMO. That said I do like the HP's and I'm not a guide.

I had the 1106 for 5 or so years and they were fine, have hp's now and I like them better but buddies screw them up all the time, takes a bit of practice to work them.

^^^^ What these guy's said.

I plan on getting them and have talked with both of these individuals about them. You just have to set them up right and then tell your buddies how to operate them lol. Most lost balls with these newer riggers are operator errors. Apparently Scotty fixed the fogging issue with the digital read out as well. Can someone confirm that?

Sculpin or anyone else for that matter, what is the right way to set them up and how to operate them. I have heard they are touchy.

Run 2- 2106 and a 1106 down the middle.... really like the Hp's for the deep water fishery and the 1106 is usually for the surface .. the tuna/mono cord stopper system has pretty well stopped any loss cnbs on the Hp's ...mined you I did have a 6 -cnb lost in on day in Gold river last year..ouch operators error.... kinda like ground hog day... :)

what he said, the cord stopper system, there are pics on the site if you search them out.

I ended up getting a couple of 1106 for $400 each with no tax. And with my savings I am going to upgrade my vhf radio. I got one fishing buddy that is pretty hard on the gear so it just makes sense to not get the hp as I can see many balls dropping to the bottom.

thanks for the input boys
