The more I look at the rod holders that came with the downriggers, the more I feel leery about using them.
They just seem "shallow" in the length of the rod butt that fits into the holder.
Anybody had any problems with them or am I fretting over nothing?
No problems, but I don't own any Islanders, so I haven't ever considered worrying. I did lose a cheap rod and reel once to a rail mount that spun on the rail.
I used to worry but now like that I can pull the rod out quickly. Never lost a rod. If you are concerned pull the plastic pin out on the bottom of the holder and your rod but will pass thorugh the holder and stop at the reel.
I have the rod holders mounted on the downrigger shaft from the factory and like you was leary at first but 7 yrs later I don't even think about them anymore, they work fine and no problems for me.
Watch how much twist there is on the gunnel mounted rod holders and you will think the boom mounted are the best choice. Always the same part on the rod holder that strips out is the part that fits down into the hole and has teeth like a gear. Should be able to replace that part but no you have to buy the whole rod holder.
Two words-striker rodholders. There's a reason They cost more- they're way better.
I too have a DR mounted rodholder and I pulled the pin on it the first time it saw a rod.No concerns after that
