Scotty Downrigger spoil warped

I've searched here and online about some Scotty rigger spools warping which one of mine did.

Have others had this happen? Some are saying Scotty now suggests 400' or less of braid possibly to minimize pressures when braid dries. I have about that much braid on mine and don't want my other riggers to do the same

I will contact Scotty just thought I'd ask for other experiences here first.

Let's hope that Scotty is not using cheaper plastics or something of that nature. Anyone working for Scotty please correct me. Love their products!

Braid can work itself inside the seam where the top and bottom half of the spool meet, then expand and warp or crack the spool. One remedy is to wrap the spool with a layer of duct tape or packaging tape prior to spooling on the braid to keep this from happening. Seems to be a problem only with braid. I've warped two spools over the past 5 years and haven't yet had problems once I taped them. Also a good idea to buy a spare spool so you can fix on the water and save your trip.

Thanks for that suggestion Barry. I will try that from now on.
