Scotty Downrigger Rod Holder Replacement

Get rid of those darn things! I know if at least a dozen lost rod/reel setups because of them.

After reading some of the comments I am going to get away from my boom mounts and mount either Orcas or Strikers on my gunnel. Is there any considerations for mounting position? I’ve seen them forward and aft of the rigger and I’m sure sure distance is a factor. Any thoughts?

Mine are forward of the riggers as well but that has more to do with where the riggers are mounted and the layout of my boat. Also for your info my recent failure was on the mounting post on the Orca and as others have said, there are several case where they fail. I’m going to give the Striker a try as that is what many have recommended.

I took them off the downriggers and replaced them with stainless steel rod holders called Manifish at $40 a pop on Amazon.
I did put a bit of plumbers tape around the downrigger tubing for the clamp to grip on.
Second season -no issues.

I replaced the factory flush mount rod holders with Burnewiin bases and bought the two types of rod holders and cleats for fenders.
I moved the one flush mount to the transom and it mostly holds my gaff but I do have an adapter for a third rod holder if wanted.
The boom mount rod holders now just hold the clip while I’m feeding my line out to drop it again.
Pulling the rod out of these holders instead of reaching out over the boom has been a game changer.

After snapping off a few I monkey rigged a heavy cord so that it prevents rod holder from bending to the breaking point. Especially a problem when fishing deep. See pic

Looks great.

Scotty 247s on my boat and I never worry about those gear splines failing again. Easy to adjust and easy on rods / reels.
The other good thing about Scotty 247 compared to the boom mount is it brings the rod butts in to the gunnel, closer to the person trying to lift out the rod. Can be hard to get the rod out of the boom mount on some boats, especially with cork grips. 11years on ours and no problems.

Looks great.
Thanks; this system works great for me although your particular layout may call for a different solution.

Just something to consider when mapping out your setup: A boat I was on this summer had the rod holders on the gunnel ahead of the rigger and the tip of the rod (9’) would intermittently tap on the downrigger boom right by the fairlead on the turns. A hard bite at the wrong time could have snapped the tip off.

Charter boat out of WH that we use has Strykers mounted a couple of ft forward of the riggers, with a short leash tethering it to the gunwale. When a fish hits, we just lift rod and holder off the mount and allow the Stryker to fall away from the rod. Works well.

Really? the rod holder is locked into the base, no ?

Do they not use the locking collar? You have to twist it s half turn first to get the rod to lift.
