Scotty Depthopower Issue

Why when I fish in the rain do my Scotties seem to have issues with the brake? It seems some times (not always) that after I retreive the ball and the sensor hits the stop bead that the brake doesn't engage and the ball starts free falling? Is it an adjustment? Do I just need them serviced?

Us an open end box wrench and give the jam nut (lower) about 1/2 turn clockwise.
That will stop the brake from slipping.

Or you could require new brakes. My downriggers are older and used to have the old red brake handles. I was having the same issue you described. Took them to Scotty and they replaced the part for free which fixed the problem.

Try adjusting and if it doesn't work replace the brake either yourself or through Scotty.

It happened to me to on I think it's just the brake gets wet and slips I just fished the rest of the day with that problem it was close to the end of the day when it started to happen

Yes, it always happens later in the day after you've cycled them up and down a few dozen times during a rainy period. I have tried adjusting the nut on top and find that if I tighten it too much the weight doesn't fall freely sometimes. Guess I need to have Scotty look at them.

Sometimes the brakes themselves get a glaze on them. There are 3 of them under the brake handle-either turn them over and put the other side up or give them a rough up and take the glaze off with some 80 grit sandpaper-I have used brake lining cleaner(make sure they are out of their holders as I'm not sure what that will do to the scotty plastic) give them a squirt -wipe clean and replace.

Return spring for the brake lever needs a fix....

Return spring for the brake lever needs a fix....

this is what fixed this problem for me. symptoms were a little different though. It would do it in dry conditions and throughout the day. worth cleaning and flipping the pads as well when your in there.

The older units do not have the brake return spring. I had the same problem on mine, the spring fixed it.

X3 on the brake spring-when you service the brakes themselves that spring can easily be put in incorrectly and not work-so yes it certainly could be the problem as well!
