hey everybody, I would like to go out for scallops but I don't have a clue how to find them, can anybody help me please, thanks.

Rock Scallops although very tasty are such a slow growing scallop (those that you would eat would be decades old similar to abalony) that we personally don't harvest any at all. We know where to find them, and enjoy seeing them when we do dive tours, but in the name of conservation and trying to let the species repopulate leave them alone and would hope that other do the same unless you know an area where the colonies are really thriving and you harvest selectedly.

The little swimming pink scallops, like those harvested off Quadra, would be tough to get at without commercial gear. They use dredging nets with tickler chains hanging down to harvest them out of reasonably deep water.

I'm not sure that scallops in BC are a recreational game. We harvest all of ours by buying them from the shellfish farms in Okeover :-)

Does anybody know if there is a shellfish farm where I can buy scallops near Victoria, thanks guys.

Not down that way, although I do know there are some being grown at Saltspring.

I work for Island Scallops, the company that produces the seed for the satellite sites as well as an extensive culturing program of our own.

The hatchery is located in Qualicum Bay, (just north of Qualicum Beach) and you can buy live or shucked scallops directly from them. Soon frozen half shell will be available also.

They are incredible, several on the site have tried them.

If you let me know, I could deliver some down that way on my next journey. (Should it ever transpire) If you are looking for a fair quantity, you could call the hatchery and they'd likely have them delivered.

Yup, and me being one of them. What Jeff said. They are delicious.

wabbitswayer,

If you are in Victoria, you can get them at Finest at Sea across the street from Fisherman's wharf. They are the same farmed scallop from Qualicum Bay as what Osama said. It's really really good. They also have them by the frozen bins as well.

HS.

I have been fortunate enough to sample scallops, compliments of Osama, for the last three years at the Browns Bay Chum Derby.

They are exceptional. Jeff, stopped by your worksite about a month ago, but the young lady I spoke to didn't know you. She figured you may not work at the plant.

I think I need to place an order.

Hey Mark, no I don't work at the plant. Avoid going there as much as possible really, I'm skippering one of the boats on the farm.

In fact, we are harvesting today in the gale so since I'm out there riskin' my butt anyway I'll see if I can't find a few screwy shelled ones for ya.

Hope you feel like driving north!

Jeff
