Saltwater 2009 vs. 2010

I am pretty well convinced that the 2009 season was an anomaly as far as salt water fishing.
Although we pulled the odd skunk, there was more Halibut and Salmon last year in numbers that i've seen for a long time.
the 2010 season started out decently , but has really fallen flat over the last month.
Seems you have to work pretty hard to find the odd fish.
Would others agree with this ?

I am only really comparing my treks to WCVI in both Tofino and Kyuquot around the same time both years thus far.

Tofino...not as many fish as we were into last year at the end of May. There were fish around but we really hit a hot time last year at the same time.

Kyuquot....about a one week difference between this year and last year. Last year....lots of fish and notably larger fish. This year....lots of springs, just not all that big compared with '09. We did manage more hali's this year as there seemed to be many, many more around.

As for coho...last year in Kyuquot they were thick and a pain in the arse after a while. Only hooked 2 this year and saw a couple following the gear up that showed themselves right at the surface.

I haven't been out in our "local" waters since a trip to Thrasher in early June but from what I hear things aren't too bad locally in Van waters this year. I'd have to let other guys comment who have been out over here more this year.

Winter Harbour is down from last year however it may also have a lot to do with wind-fewer guys outside for less time. Also the tougher conditions (few people consider this) the presentation to the fish deteriorates-ie. less checking of gear-maybe fishing hardware as opposed to anchovy or cut-plug. I have had no problem getting springs -they seem smaller than last year as an average.Coho are scarce compared to last year. Don't feel competant to comment on bottom fish as I only take them as an incidental catch and seem about the same as last year for me.

For Victoria/Sooke: winter springs pretty strong until end of May. Summer springs - completely missing this year. The great June fishery we had in 09 was a complete write-off this year. The great number of cohos that showed late June-mid July last year hasn't showed at all this year. It's the 3rd week in July and we haven't seen a single decent summer run this year coming through yet (which would be Fraser or Pudget Sound bound). Worst year I have seen.

Halibut, just as good or even better than 09 from what I can tell.

Here in McNeill the biggest difference is the lack of coho. They are just not here in any numbers to say they are here.....

Springs were pretty good in June, but they have dies off here. It is hit or miss, with the some good days and some not so good. The odd boat is picking up fish, but most boats not getting anything. The fish seem to be smaller, but there is also a few large ones around as well. Halibut and bottom fish in general are slower, but still there is some around.

Hopefully there is a turn around and the fishing picks up again.

Bring on the Sockeye and Pinks!!!!!

Cheers

2010 is still better than 2008, which was the worst ever.

x2!!! But I have to agree with the fish size comment...2009 was the best season ever...like it was unreal. This yaer is really good, just smaller fish...I'd say a 18lb average compared to about a 24 or 25lb average we had last year...but still lots of action so no complaining here!! Plus this year will always be my best due to the 64#er.

I was thinking of making this exact same post yeaterday. Didn't do it because I thought I'd be shot down in flames . Most guys don't want to hear any negativity regarding fish returns. I caught flack last year when i compared the fishing to the old days and how it really was a downward trend. Most were saying 2009 was great and how 2010 was going to be better yet. I don't live on the Island, but I read the forum very regularly. This years good fishing reports on the forum has been way down in most areas of the island from last year. It has been a huge drop the good reports and glory shots that were being regularly posted last year.

I guess what goes around comes around, because the fishing near Vancouver has been better than it has been in a while.

Only my obervations, your milage may vary.
