Salt in the Wound: A missing anchor setup

Well, went out today to try and find a halibut, and no surprise, we couldn't. But what was the salt in the wound was losing my new anchor setup. I was anchored up at SW Constance. 48 19.236 N 123 23.154 W It was very quiet for us out there so around 1:30 I decided to unclip from the anchor and drift for a bit. It was basically slack or slight ebb. We slowly drifted west and about 2:30 we were about 1 mile west of our scotchman. We decided to call it and headed back to our waypoint, but couldn't see our scotchman anywhere. Cruised around for about 30 minutes and it was glassy and my ball is a large orange one so it should have been there. It was clipped off to a quick link between the float line and the anchor line. Not sure if someone ran it over or pulled it on me, but needless to say it was a painful end to my day. If anyone was out there and saw anything, please let me know. Information will be treated with beer, smoked salmon, cash, or what have you. If you are just a visitor on this website reading this and saw anything, call or email. davejsemailAThotmail.com 250-893-8367

thanks,

Dave, that sucks big time. A thought though, did you have your name & phone number on the scotchman?
I had a crab trap lost & then found, and was called by an honest guy.

Lots of honest people out there! hope you had your info on the ball. Just speaking from experience, you catch the big halis tied to it! not drifting from it. Pull it, if you aint using it, altough, I guess some guys abondon them with scent bags on'em, to come back later, I personally dont. my 2 cents

I didn't have any scent on the anchor, but have heard that sometimes when it's slow or the conditions allow for it, guys unclip and drift for a bit. I am a rookie but the only halibut I caught was after unclipping from the anchor.

When I really think about it, I am not sure if I did have my info on the ball. F@CK ME!!

Ill take a look for it later for ya dave wish me luck, you going out to as well???

Hope you get it back Dave. Weirder things have happened.
Lost all four of my prawn traps in a current so I know how it feels.

Is there any I'd on it?

sure he posted that there was No ID on the buoy
well if thats the case and someone passing has picked it up then chances are slim to getting it back

but you never know!!!

next time name and tel number on it does not mean it wont get picked up but at least it may get returned

now if only they would not pick up crab/ prawn traps as sure they can't read ?????

Someone was just telling me they are planning on going out and getting some anchoring advice from you. Im guessing he hasnt seen this thread yet lol. Sorry man just teasin, hope you find your gear, that sucks.

Dave - there's a chance. Family & I took the Coho to Port Angeles this morning. My son and I spotted an unaccompanied Scotchman floating near a yellow buoy (yellow can buoy?). It didn't look to be moving. Maybe?

Man that sucks !!! But don't ever disconnect from your anchor unless its an emergency. Pull it and take it with you, Pita trying to re hook to it if the weather blows up, which at constance can be days or weeks, and with all the freighter and pilot boats going through there ............. AYE!

Thats a drag Dave, according to my murray's tables there would have been a very fast ebb at 2:30 which could easily have pulled your scotsman down under. years ago on a smaller boat i had a scotsman let go from the boat and go under, i went out a few days later when the weather permitted and fortunately it had popped back up in slower current and i got it all my gear back. Hope it shows up, did you post a notice at Esquimalt Anglers ?

I did post a a note and chatted with the guys at Esquimalt Anglers. Headed out there today to see what I could find......FOUND IT! I guess the ebb pulled it under yesterday. It's crazy that when we unclipped, we weren't even drifting away from it but an hour or so after was enough to pull it out of sight. Well learned something new. Don't unclip if the currents are picking up. Really surprised that the drag will pull a large scotchman down. It was too rough to comfortably fish out there when I got there so pulled it and headed over to Albert Head to find some protection.

Anyways, my weekend has gotten much better! Mmmmm beer tastes good right now!

Saw that one but it's not mine. No name on it. Hope they get it back before it gets run over. Seemed to be in the line of fire of those bigguns.

Tail between my legs. I'll be sure to use a disclaimer when I fish and anchor with anyone.

Thats awesome !!

It can turn fast and hard sometimes, i've had big scotsmans go down while anchored and the anchor line was almost straight down from the boat and it felt like i was in a river.

Do some of you guys ever put a small secondary float on the floating line so that if the main bouy gets dragged under the second one would possibly stay at the surface as it just trails behind the main which is taking the strain of the anchor? Just thinking out loud as I am pretty new to the whole halibut thing and could see how it might help in a situation like this. Any thoughts? Or would it even work?
