Salmon Smokers near Vancouver

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good smoke house in and around Vancouver. The place I went to last Summer has gone out of business.

Specifically looking for a place that does kick butt lox & candied/maple salmon. Would appreciate any recommendations in the Lower Mainland. Thanks

St. Jeans cannery in Nanaimo makes excellent candied salmon. You can drop your fish off at their depot in the South Terminal of Vancouver Airport

Check out Granville Island Smokehouse - on Granville Island next to the Lobsterman.

St Jean's is very very ordinary and their customer service leaves much to be desired.

GI Smokehouse is long gone replaced by a seafood retail place.

So the Best Lox is done by Ocean Master in Maple Ridge

Classic does great Hot Smoked I have an order waiting-all White Springs!

Bruce's in Maple Ridge is a favourite of many-they seemed to have changed the recipe/don't like it as much

Yoshi's in North Van does Lox

X2 on Yoshi's.

Always had great results. They only do cold smoked for sport caught fish ( they do various types commercially only .....for Salmon Village on Thurlow St. http://www.salmonvillage.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=3)

They will accept whole salmon or cut salmon. A tip if you want to save $ . Take off heads or even filet the fish as you pay for incomming weight. To keep filets legal, just leave the tail on one of the filets.

One other comment. Yoshi's debones the cross/pin bones of the filets for their lox.
I have had lox and Indian candy done by St. Jeans but they didn't debone the pin bones of the fish. It was all very good, especially the Indian Candy but I didn't like getting a mouthfull of cross/pin bones !!

Yoshi's will vacuum pack a filet whole or in seveal smaller pieces as long as you are willing to pay a buck more per package.

St. Jeans's smoked canned was very good ......great for shipping out as gifts - some limitations to locations abroad however

X2....that's where I take all of my fish.

Key thing is....don't go to drop off or pick up your fish on a sunny weekend afternoon. You'll wanna kill all the morons walking around Granville Island.

As for St. Jeans....I wouldn't waste my time with them ever again. Didn't think much of their service...and really wasn't all that crazy about their cold smoked product; was happier with Granville Island and Trilogy's product in Tofino. That is the only kind of smoking I get done....chunks of different types of cold smoke.

I have also heard very good things about Yoshi's but can't comment on the others. Too far for me to drive. ;) [:p]

I'm a big fan of Yoshi's. I send a couple of white springs and a half dozen sockeye to them most years. I did a couple of Chum last year and they were as good as any spring I've had smoked. Pin bone removal is a bonus, I guess,I thought everyone did it...

Thanks guys! Very much appreciated. I'll put a few more sox in the freezer before taking a decent sized load of fish in and will let ya know how it turns out.

Anyone had any great candied or maple salmon done at places not mentioned here?

I've tried some stuff from Classic Smoke House from last year and was pretty happy with it. Will be dropping off some sockeye next week there and will keep you posted on pricing and, more importantly, how it turns out tasting.

buy a bradely smoker & do your own just remember to bring the heat up slowly over the first four hours and read the instructions! I find the smoke salmon I turn out to be just as good or as friends & family say better than most comercial smokers you can also take pride knowing you worked it your own way. if you need any tips or the name to super book on smoking fish & related recipies email me it's on my profile regards Sammy[:p]
