For those of you who can remember. For one brief summer, four years ago, Cormorant Point in Gordon head was the place to be. Guys from van were booking their holidays to come to our neighbourhood to catch Coho from float tubes on the fly. So when my daughter went to Belmacarra beach this am to read and came home talking about seeing porpoises and sea lions and terns snagging baitfish I figured I would launch the kayak for a little look see.
It was awesome man.
I launched from Timber Lane and picked up a big school of ?? moving north from Mt Doug Beach. Jumping and slashing through bait fish. they were about 5 to 8 lbs and there were 3 in the air at once. I couldnt id?? What would they be? Blue on silver. Socks??
There were a bunch and at one point they came right at the boat and i thought "holy ****. get ready. they are going to jump right in the cockpit. I'm going to club one". Nearly had a heart attack!
They were moving North in 25 ' of water at 1/2 paddling speed at 9pm. A guy trying to fish them would have a hell of a time with all the crap in the water.
Beautifull experience paddling with them though.
I'm gonna hit the oak bay flats at the change tomorrow. Wish me luck

I remember casting from the rocks as a 10 or 11-year-old (twenty odd years ago) at Balmacarra Beach and my friends brother catching a salmon on a buzz bomb. It is a very vivid childhood memory. I thought those were different times - but maybe not!!

Blue backs (Coho), great that they are back after many years.
Ocean temp at 47 deg F on the weekend, cold water is the key.
Salty, try the gap towrds the end of the ebb.
it's been good !

I remember seeing that at arbutus cove about 10 - 15 years ago. Thanks for the heads up. I am gonna grab a beer, and head down and sit on the beach and watch tonight. Can you see from the beach? Maybe being higher up at arbutus cove would be better.

Cormorant point is to the left of the Belmacarra drive beach access in Gordon head. Cormorant point is part of an old derelict salt water swimming pool when the estate above was a summer camp.
If you go, watch out for the mosquitos.
Last night the fish were moving north from the beach at Mt Doug park north . Very little beach access here because of Mt Doug Parkway bluff and private homes.
I had no luck bucking the tides at the Gap today

I went to have a look last night. From the beach, i could see tons of bait. I saw a couple seals, but i didn't see any bigger fish. I was only on the beach though. Seemed like there was lots of activity going on. I went to have a look at Arbutus cove, and it was the same thing. However, i did see a bigger fish jump, except that was only about 2 pounds.
