Just curious, when you guys are dragging plugs behind your boat, do you also run different set ups on other rods like anchovy or spoons? Or is it all plugs and nothing else?

Matador

Well, this is what I do:

If I know there are big fish around and they are biting on plugs, I will run one on the first drop in the AM. Otherwise, I will stick with at least one Anchovy rig, maybe two, and a dependable hootchy/flasher rig on the other side.

Once I have a few fish in the box, then I pull out the big Tomic Plugs and start targeting big Chinooks.

I always run bait on the Port side of the boat. When I run a single plug, it aways goes on the Starboard side. No real reason other than it's a habit I got into. It could easily be reversed.

I generally run my gear within 20' of the downrigger cable. Plugs go back 3 to 4 times that distance. A couple of reasons for this.

1- I want the big Plug trailing all the other gear to pick up that Big Chinook that is easily spooked by flashers and other gear.

2- Putting it on such a long leash let's it work side to side over a larger area, and gives the Plug more action as it skitters from side to side.

On many of the days that I've run my Plugs this way, I have been rewarded with the biggest fish of the day.

And don't forget to give them a good dose of Anchovy or Herring Oil or your favourite scent before putting them out.

Do you use the regular 6 and 7 inch plugs or one a tubby?

I use 5", 6" and 7" depending on what is happening at the time.

I like to use the biggest available if I'm targeting big fish, but they don't always bite the big lures. Sometimes you have to downsize a bit.

Last year, we were having a good day off-shore and had a box full of fish, but no big brutes. I threw on one of my big 7" Tomic Plugs and told the client that we were now trophy hunting. It might not get a bite, but if it does, it will be a good size.

We picked up two over the next hour, a 32 and a 36 if I recall correctly.

So I purchased some plugs and plan on giving them a try around Prince Rupert. All of the plugs came with a brass ring off the tow bar - do you cut the ring off and tie directly to the tow bar? Thanks for the tips.

I've always cut the ring off and tied directly to the tow bar. For this I use 60# Triplefish line, and have a leader of about 3 to 4 feet long.
