Salmon Nets and Technique

Well since everyone seems to have their specific way to poon a halibut, thought I'd ask the question how and when do you use your net?

What brand do you use?
What lenght?
What size of mesh?
What kind of mesh?
Do you hold your bag? For how long?

I only buy Scotty nets.

I always try for head, and hold the bag till the last second

Scotty bag but not a Scotty net(too heavy), 6 ft handle-net head first and hold the bag until the fish is starting into the net and I'm sure it can't be snagged.

always, always, always head first. lost a monster years ago at the mouth of the kalum due to my nephew (who actually knows better) trying to scoop from the tail. while on the subject anyone have a preference for replacement bags? (netting) I've repaired mine in a couple places (just using 100lb braid) but might be best to just replace with a new replacement netting. I have a scotty net. been looking at this site but not really sure yet which net to choose or if they are good quality nets...

I'm a fan of the Scottys as well, I would really like to find one of the smaller ones they used to make with the smaller hoop.

I have found the Scotty replacement bags are good.

Run 2 scotty nets on the boat...Like the nets don't like the bags..replaced them with the Gibbs ones.. one of them has the Gibbs release bag..work great with no problems....:)

I have two Scotty nets, one with a four ft handle for when I have others on board, and one with a seven ft handle for when I am alone; comes in very handy with a long leader.
On a different note, when using a drop net off a pier, it is advisable with a large salmon to net it by the tail. It may seem odd but the technique involves lifting the salmon partway out of the water, moving the drop net under it and then quickly dropping the salmon into it.

I still have nitemares of my never used 140$ catch and release mesh Scotty net flying of the roof of my fugly boat, damn near shed a tear... Scotty net all the way! Head first when the fish is resonably tired..

Scotty nets with the 6 foot handle. Head first, hard and fast. If im fishing with a buddy and his fish is bigger then mine I usually try and catch the mesh on on of the hooks and give it a little yank LOL

and I wouldn't use a net on any halibut over 40 lbs... large halibut can easily destroy a net when they're pissed. they'll tear it apart. ask me how I know...lol, best to use a gaff or spear. even for the smaller ones imho.

I never hold my bag while netting. I like to have two hands on the net at all times. If the fish is big enough after landing I might grab my bag for celebration purposes only .

We picked up one of the Gibbs Delta rubberized/small mesh C&R net last year. I can't find it online but so far no complaints at all. The bag on this one isn't worth holding but I did hold the mesh when using the scotty nets.

I agree with what's already been said about netting technique. One thing I'll add that I learned guiding and think is very important is to not even touch the net until seconds before you're about to use it. Nothing worse than a guy running around on the dancefloor waving around a net when the fish isn't even close to being ready.

Oh and if it's a teener I'm willing to net the thing up, down, left, right, North, south, east, west, head, tail, who cares. :)

These are the ones ive used for about 15 years now gone thru 2 of them in that time

tangle free net and the handle rocks its shaped like a triangle so it doesnt twist or slip in your hands and the bag is weighted on the back side of it .....What I did do though is put a float on it and stuffed it with foam in the handle as I lost the first one over board only to see it sink to the bottom.YES they have gone up alot WOW but well worth it as they have a lifetime warranty

When im landing a fish I like to just get its head in and touch its belly with bottom rim of net they swim at mach1 into net even had them slam into boat. too easy...

Good luck Wolf
