Ok since you guys, girls were so helpful with the daughter wedding thing how about some help with picking up a couple of halibut setups. Don't want to spend too much but want something decent. Am not sure if I should go for a combo or buy separatly. Ideas? Brands? Size? Was hoping to pick something up in the states over the long weekend in October, or would I get better deals up here? Thanks ahead of time...

I think that I need to go fishing!

I just picked up a couple of Halibut combos from Trotac Marine in Vic. They were listed for 179 but got them for 155. They consisted of a Penn 330GT2 reel and an Ugly Stik bigwater rod with aluminium oxide guides and spooled with 300yds of tuff line.

I see Trotac Marine is moving to a new location in Victoria(Gorge & Jutland) have been told by a good source to head down if you're looking for some new gear...they don't want tolug everything to the new place so most will be cleared at bargain basement prices!!!...SS

I put together a heavy combo this summer, a penn senator 4/0 and an ugly stick 6.6ft with the hopes of catching some big halibut. I only got one 18lb though. This rod/reel setup was relatively cheap and handles 10lb fish like they were minnows. Should be fun with a big one.

shimano TLD reels are the best. lever drag and bullet proof. tld 15-25 will suite your needs perfectly.

Hey Sammy or anyone else.... do you know when Trotac is making their move to the new location?

Looks like they'll be up & running sometime before Xmas...most likely by anytime after Nov...lots of pre-prep building show cases etc. to be done...stay tuned for details as they move forward & dig out the stuff there will be some great deals to be had...pop in from time/time to see what is on the sale shelf...SS

I will try to make a stop at Trotac when I head over in a couple of weeks. I know that Shimano is a nice reel but a bit pricey for me, was thinking about a Penn, noticed a lot of them being used on the charter boats. the 330's look quite popular.
