I have a 24 ft boat ...not much ocean experience.I was wondering if it is reasonably safe to run from Port Hardy over to Rivers Inlet and also the availability of fuel and other ammenities once there.
This year I would of said that 1 in 2 days you would be fine. Definitely pick your days though as there were many that were not the nicest out there. Going up you are going against the swell and this year the swell was pretty crappy...coming back you would be fine as long as its not a SE. But heading up...pick your day but should be ok.
my wife and I did it 7 years ago it was a great trip. there was fuel in duncanby landing and dawsons. It was ruff when we crossed we planned it that we left the \same time that the ferry left port hardy (then queen of the north) and followed close to it so it broke the waves for us. we were in a 18 foot bayliner trophy and our partners were in a 23 trophy. we had a blast.
You would have no problem making it to Rivers in your boat. I have made the run the last 7 years in the first week of August. Used to do it in a 20ft Campion. You have to listen to the weather of course but by leaving early, early in the morning the weather is the best. Should take about 3 hrs from Hardy travelling at about 25kts. There is fuel in Duncanby Landing, Dawson's, then further up in Shearwater and Bella Bella. Try to pack what you can as things are not cheap up there.
It is a fantastic trip and I do recommend doing it if you have the time. Feel free to contact me if you have any other question.
