Requesting tips and suggestions for samon

Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie for salmon.
Have a 14' Whaler, downriggers, gps etc.
Have Sept 8th -12th to come fishing for salmon and am asking anyone who cares to suggest where I should go, what to use, how things are going etc.

I hear the offshore fishing is good but in my small boat with the forcast I'll be staying close to shore.

As well my plan is to take my digital VHF radio into the shop to get some marine channels installed. Could you suggest what channels are used in your area.
ie. 16, coast guard but what channels do the recreational fishermen use?

68 is almost always a sporties channel. and if ur looking for some action but not big fish, sooke would be ur best bet weather regaurding. Some sweet cohos and they are opening it for one wild one hatchery on the 8th of sept.

you may want to double check the wild coho status...according to Fisheries website Sooke area opens for 1 wild coho effective Oct 1....can anyone else clarify this....I may have too much Crown Royal
in my blood tonight

hi, thanks for your comments
We're coming from Whistler with the little lady. Brave soul she is (prarie gal) the swell, wind and waves are new to her so if I wish to keep my new helmsperson on board our routes of choice will be scenically close to land.
From all I'm hearing the biggies are hiding, Coho's are plentiful and close to shore. She does though dream of Halibat, yes I know, the highway is where she should be, we'll watch the weather, maybe late in the week if the forecast holds true.

We're open to where we go but tomorrow a.m. we hit the highway south. Once we hit Departure Bay our decision will have to be made.
