Removal of old boat numbers/ k numbers

I just purchased a trophy from seattle and have new numbers for the boat, does anyone know how to remove old stickers from hull without to much damage? Thanks, Scott

I haven't removed stickers from a boat, but have removed many decals from fiberglass and plastic snowmobile hoods. I use a blow dryer to warm up the decals, then peel them off. It can be a pain in the azz, but it works. I then use WD-40 to remove the glue residue.

Thanks, I have to do mine soon too. Still contemplating the painted on name, and the voodoo involved in a name change

My boat came from washington as well, if you have to take off the registration sticker it will soften with the blow drier but it designed to break apart if you try a peel it. I went to Home Depot and got a plastic scraper designed to remove silicon from around bath tubs and scraped it off with that and the blow dryer.

Hey Scotty,

Congrats on the new to you Trophy. I would recommend you use a blow dryer unless you got a heat gun but be careful with the heat gun. All you need is a little patience and those American numbers will come right off. If you still have a residue, try using Windex to take it off or just warm soap and water. You don't want to be rubbing the gel coat off that. Check with your local Marina for boat numbers and regulations in your area for proper size. Enjoy :D

I wanted to add that although WD-40 works well and it's all I use because it's always in the shop, many friends have told me that a better product for the adhesive is a product called Goo Be Gone.

Ediit: It's called Goo Gone.

Peanut butter works too. I don't know what it would do to the gel coat but I've used it on truck bumpers.

3m makes a product that fits in your drill, they are only about 5 bucks. they are a tan colored wheel of a gummy rubber like material. takes the stickers or vinyl off with ease!
