reel problem

I folks,Our chum finally showed up in the river.The problem is when the fights on, my damn reel goes into free spool, is this a small problem or did i burn it out.It happened twice.It became one of the magnificent birds nest you'll ever see,lol. I was using a ambassodour 5500.Granted i do put a lot of pressure on it when fighting [makes um jump]These are nice fish they still have live sealice on them.How long in fresh water does it take to kill the lice?
 
I had a similiar problem with mmy ambassador and the repair guy said it was a common problem with the new models. He repaired it fairly quickly and only cost me around $20.00.
 
Hi Thorten ,the river is the nooksack.The fish were big and bright.and the sealice were still alive.
