Why would you want it?

I was trying to save you money. Your in same neck of woods as me. The inside really doesn't get much fog like westcoast.

I only got mine because I spend a great deal time fishing remote areas like Barkley Sound

I don't use mine that often on inside. Only really to monitor idiots in summer honestly. I also rurn it on sometimes to just look at how busy Brechin or Ladysmith is when going in.

I always tell people approach buying those brand new domes with caution. There are more stories of failed ones. Spending a lot of money on something that can fail is something to be cautious on.

I have radar overlay. It seriously is a gamechanger. I am sure you already have it as you have autopilot.

The dome I have in old 3G I bought used from someone who upgraded. For like 800.00 it worked out and was able to spend money elsewhere.

For inside boats I think the best solution there is AIS . On inside we get a lot of ferry traffic and also commercial freighters. You can now get standalone plug and play units for much cheaper thar interface with plotter etc.

I’d want it for safety sake. I know it wouldn’t get used much as I am a Nanoose guy but I do venture to places like The Westcoast or Hardy. My old radar is pooched so I should have something. I have the tech to be able to accept radar overlay so why not get something new that works with the tech I have. It’s only money and not much difference between this deal and used.

AIS is not intended for collision avoidance, radar is the primary source

They have to be installed correctly, wow quite a statement , I didnt know you were a pro installer on electronics now.....

Nope wrong again I asked 2 difernet guys who install for a living 2 very well know builder in the field one said hes hooked up over 100 of them BUT he did say make sure you install in a a shop or somewhere with less humidity as the ends do NOT like moisture at all . HENCE why I said install correctly ........did you learn now??? LOL

You don't need overlays you need to know how to interface with the radar. I run boats at night ALOT. Which is why from this captains perspective, having an overlay just make my charting difficult to read quickly. Which is why I alway use a separate monitor for my radar screen. Other reasons are brightness settings and redundancy.

So Wolf’s simrad deal on defender for the halo20, Simrad 9” mfd and a transducer for $2800 is a good deal.
The AIS only shows registered vessels. That’s more of a nice thing to have but not as important as radar which shows everything.

That's a pretty darn good deal. Won't do better than that I'd say.

Ais for sport vessels is a huge waste of money and it is not a navigational aid whatsoever. Get radar, keep it separate of you can. Learn how to use it. That's the most important thing.

Yeah I remember all those engineering design meetings with coast guard when we installed ais on the lightstations and buoys.

I can imagine I would have get laughed out of design room that having it on boat was waste of time.

Radar overlay is negative seriously guys get real.

This is what I decided to go with as per Wolf’s suggestion. The bundle has the simrad halo20 dome, simrad GO9 XSE mfd with cmap discover and a skimmer transducer.
The simrad mfd is compatible with my HDS pro 9. I’ll use the simrad mfd more as a stand alone with the radar but when radar is not in use I can use my Merc engine monitoring on either device so can switch back and forth between screens to whatever makes sense. They both have split screens as well so can all kinds things at once.

Why would u go with a stand a long unit for your radar when you can use a radar overlay on your gps. You should know simard and Lowrance don't play nice together..love my Simard stuff . If you want to pop up to my place happy to show the overlay and my system.
