I'm thinking about putting a couple of downriggers on my 12 foot tinner. Looking at the Scotty 1060 Depthking. Anyone own these and think these are suitable for this application and for use with 10 lb weights etc?
This is for use in the salt BTW, not lake. For messing around out front of Esquimalt and the breakwater on calmer days, not for going to the Trap or anything. lol
Hey Kildonan.. I have fished depthkings off of my 12 ft. Lund for many years with great success. The only time I've had problems is when I've tried to run them both at depths below 50 ft. as the currents can make a real mess or like when your turning to sharp. I've fished one at 180 ft. and the other up top with no probs. Good Luck. eman
Kildonan, I found the same thing. I run my 13 foot Alaskan with the same set up for the same area when I want to run close after work. Works just fine except running deep in which I stagger as eman stated.
I'm running two small scotty's off my 14' lund.. I use to have the odd problem but I've since bent the fins on my downrigger weights so the weights stear away from the boat a little.. no problems fishing 100' + on both lines with 9lb balls. Wouldn't want to go any smaller than 9lbs though.
Thanks, folks. I believe I have just purchased 2, used 1060's, just waiting on confirmation which I don't think will be a problem. Looking forward to giving them a whirl.
Good advice, but better still, make sure your downriggers brake is adjusted properly. That way, if you do snag bottom the clutch brake will release line slowly instead of locking up. With proper adjustment, you will have time to react and hopefully get free without sacrificing all your gear.
