Does anyone know if Quantam halibut rods and reels are of any quality? Theres a good deal at gone fishin for a quantam rod/reel combo for 110$. I have a penn reel/Abu Garcia combo and am pretty happy with it, just dont know if their the same quality.

My dad had a quantum rod, and he hooked a 100 pound skate and it busted the top 3 eyes off of it. Not saying they arnt good but I wont buy one again. They do make an awsome trout rod though!

I bought a case of their salmon rods back in 2002 or so from a tackle shop in Richmond and they all started snapping. They were off the boat within a 2 week period with only one remaining rod which my brother now owns and has never used.

They scare me.

Check out a Shimano Technium. They have a shorter, stouter rod (I forget the length & weight) that has a sensitive tip (good for putting in the rod holder while bottom bouncing) and is virtually unbreakable. They come with a lifetime warranty. Some of the best halibut and salmon rods IMHO. I don't like Quantum reels much. I would go with a Shimano TLD 20 or the new Penn TLD.

Long live wild salmon!!!

I run the Diawa eliminator. I think its one of the best hali rods ive ever used. Caught a few nice ones on it and it was fine.

reels are crap.
Good price point set up is a Pen 330 reel and Berkey lightning rod. Lots of better stuff out there but this set up is good bang for buck.

Tips Up

I don't have any experience with Quantum products but have heard stuff that others have posted. For halibut rods I'm running those little 5.5' Lamiglass jobby's that Ukranian tire had a while ago. 99 bucks isn't bad for a decent rod. They have held up great with no eyes broken etc. I really like them.

Nothing beats a UGLY STICK

Don't know if this counts as an "ugly stick" but have used a 6'6" Sea King (roller tip) heavy action, SK 165HRT (imported from ?? - china, japan....... who knows) with a Penn #285 since the early 1980's. Have not had any trouble or broke anything...........didn't land any 50 plus pounder's but still like it. Ya gotta love the Army & Navy

Keep in mind this is the same person who is STILL using a S&A Steelite, center pin, bake-light reel, made in Australia, from the 50's or 60's, don't really know how old they are but can remember using them in the early 70's on a departed friend's boat, for salmon fishing and still using them today and still landing salmon.
