putting wax on braided line

I have fished with braided downrigger wire for years, like the way it fishes in the summer and it is nice to handle if need be but I hate it in the winter. It has a ton of drag and it takes a lot of extra cable to find bottom in the winter, someone suggested putting wax on it, any suggestions/comments. I also run 12lb balls and Iam thinking about running 15's.

Is it the Scotty braided stuff Dewey? I tryed it once and it hung way back!

I have much less drag with the 200# Powerpro with 12# finned balls, even with the fins torqued way outboard, to miss my third back rigger.

I still have wire on my back rigger, the wire requires roughly about 10-15 feet more line out, per 100' to hold bottom.

160 feet of water, 190-200 feet of Powerpro out.
160 feet of water, 220+ feet or more steel out! Same balls...

I agree with Tailspin. If you're using the Scotty stuff get rid of it. Way too thick. It must be 250lb or more and has a big diameter. I've been using 200lb PowerPro for several seasons and it has way less blow back than cable. I know others even use 150lb PowerPro which is even thinner which equals less blow back. I've stuck with the 200lb because I use 15lb balls in the winter and bounce along the bottom all day.

I have scotty [180 lb] on one side and pro line [200 lb]the other side. The scotty drags more and you can see it makes little bubbles as it goes through the water. I will stick with pro line.

So whats the voltage on that stuff then???????:D:D:D:Dsorry couldnt resist....

I tried both. The Scotty never broke, whereas the power pro had several breakage issues especially when bouncing the bottom for hali's. I'm going back to Scotty this coming season to save $ on lead. There is no question that the Scotty stuff drags back more, but it still reaches the bottom just like power pro.

I have not made the switch yet.... I'am going to be running 15 lb balls; Sctty braid, power pro 150,200??The winner is....?

I'm happy with the powerpro 150 lb. braid, thin diameter, simple
knot's as opposed to crimps.
no fraying and rusting issues.
The only thing i will say is my line counter doesn't seem right
anymore , anyone else notice that ??

p.s. i'm using 12lb finned lead's

If you lift the cover you will see the counter works off the drum. Having a smaller diameter of line loaded on the drum would mean less dept than indicated, having a larger diameter drum loaded with line would mean more dept. Smaller drum diameter of line probably would only be significant when fishing deep. This could be corrected by increasing the diameter by loading more thinner downrigger line on the drum or placing backing on the drum. I am not sure if this is a significant enough issue to worry about. It would be interesting to hear from Scotty as to what diameter of drum results in the most accurate counter reading.

I have used stainless, 200 lb Tuff XP and 150 lb PowerPro. The Tuff line worked fine, however, the PowerPro definately has less resistance and I have had no breakage issues. My catch rate is not any less since switching from black box/stainless to braided. I prefer braided, however, have lost one ball to the braid being cut by my trim tab when turing hard with the tabs down. Otherwise, no other breakage in two years.

It's my understand the reason they went with the 200# spectra is that it matched the diameter of their standard S/S cable (+ or -).
