prawn traps a little thick out there?

I wouldn't mind if they tightened up the recreational prawn fishery in Finlayson arm. I mean how many prawns can a guy eat?

I see some rigs out there that would do the commercial fleet justice.

I say we outlaw pullers !! If a guy can't hand line his own trap in, he shouldn't be out there.[}]

That would eliminate overfishing.
We got all these old farts that go out every day for something to do. They get so many prawns they don't know what to do with them.

I don't have a prawn puller, but have a fishing buddy that has a strong back, so I take him out. Got electric riggers 2 years before they came legal for everyone.[:I]. So, thinking that maybe those that complain about us senior fishermen should not be allowed to use electric riggers, only the manual ones, as it allows you to catch to many fish?..........BB

Got a better idea----- In order to keep us older and infirm has-beens out of the food banks and off the welfare roles, ban pullers and power riggers for everyone BUT the old farts. Give us free launches, free fishing licences and no tax on our gas. Allow us to get the same rights as the Indians to food and ceremonial fish and game. If we can catch and kill it, its free!!!!

Now THATseems fair to me!

I am good with that....but you "farts" gotta find a way to "sell" the fact that you need to kill seals for ceremonial purposes.

Could you try to sell it to the "powers that be" for YOUR health agenda and ceremonies down at the seniors center involving Omega 3's????? []

Well I'm an "old guy" and I don't overfish nor take hundreds of pounds of prawns , but I have watched some guys younger than me take a hell of a lot more than I ever take so I think or hope that comment was tongue in cheek because if not it's wrong to target a group because of someone with no sense or morals to think of the specie you are eliminating as " cat food" thats really dumb !

I love my prawn puller and I don't over fish. 4 traps made into two sets. I do have a injured back, even if I didn't I would use a puller. I agree the traps were thick out there last weekend, probably due to it being opening weekend after a long closure. What I do get a kick out of is the guys you see with the $100,000 boat, with $300 worth of traps and rope tied to a old No Name bleach bottle.
Unfortunately some people abuse the good prawning... young and old, if you see poaching it's your duty to turn them in.

I like the "pulse" fishing DFO policy. This is where it is open for a week or two then closed for a week or two. This forces people to remove their traps for a period and stops the bored bastards that have nothing else to do and go out everyday and take their limit if they need it or not. I swear some guys just leave their traps out there and check them sporadically. That cant be good for the resource.

Only take what you can eat. Both young and old, thin and fat, red or white.
