How long did it take before it 'packed it in'? Just wore out or do you think the salt got to it? (Wondering if I should go crazy with some marine silicone).

The worst day fishing is better than the best day working...

I think it was a combination of salt exposure and neglect. Marine silicone everything would be a good idea. Rinse it off after use and dry it off and store away properly and it should last a long time.

Scotty manual downrigger spool. Free from my old man;).
We bought those winches on sale at Cosco for 49 bucks. I think the whole unit came in just under 100 bucks when the smoke cleared. Funny about the hillbilly stuff as I think mine looks the most hillbillyish of the bunch posted:D.

I got about 3 years out her. I didn't take very good care of it. Left it in the back of the boat all the time (salt water, rain, snow over winter etc.). Didn't silicone any of the connections etc. Had to replace them a couple of times. All the paint flaked off of the winch motor. If I had taken better care of it I'm sure I would still be using it. In other words I kind of torture tested it:D.

Hello, all.

For over a number of years now (more than 5 less than 10) I've been using a converted DR.
In essence, there is a capstan sticking out the top of the DR, and the end of the boom has a sheave on it.
Benefits: parts easy to buy, all is watertight, small = easy to store, mounts to existing plates and uses existing power points.
Has plenty of power for 2 weighted traps and pulls as fast as I can coil the rope, can be used on either gunwale.
My wish is that the outer sheave was situated so that I didn't have to lean down and out to pull a trap into the boat - hell on back muscles!

Got it in Maple Bay.
Wasn't cheap, but after this number of years the value is apparent.

Smiley.

Thanks Sculpin. 3 years seems pretty good for how you say it was treated ! I'm pretty finicky about sealing electrical conections, etc. and hosing things down so it should last me quite a while.

Smiley the DR idea sounds good but too big a budget! I like the under $100 bill that some of these guys built for. If I'm buying an electric DR and converting it's probably cheaper to get an |Ace on sale!

It seems so simple! We use a wheel chair motor. 24 volt runs at half speed, the tire rime works as a one wrap bollard. works for pulling 12 traps on 12v porta power from crappytire! Cheap and simple.... oh welded to an aluiminum plate that fits a Scotty downrigger mount!

Replying to the guys who menttioned the anchour lift
I have had good success with the anchour lift, but it took a while to get the hang of it. I fish in a high tide area with heavy gear and get it all up smoothly if I pull as much slack by hand, then run in tight circles to spiral the traps up off the bottom. This cuts down on snagging and dragging them along the bottom. Until I started circling I was not happy with the method.
I stop to pull in the slack if the circles get too big or if traffic is a problem. I have the line marked so I know how far up I am. Use big snaps as the strain can deform smaller ones.

Hey guys just want to bring this old thread back to life and ask wear did you guys get the open face block (pulley) on the end of your pullers. I am working on building a puller over the weekend so any help would be appreciated. I'm in the lower mainland

...new to pullers... wondering what kind of rope-line is the best ? poly or nylon ? twisted of course. size ? thanks

prawn puller idea

I heard of a puller made from a small rotor tiller that worked like a #### Anybody tried this? It seems like the gear ratio and power would be awesome while allowing the shutting down the big engine.

What you're looking for is an open block pulley with swivel:

Should be available at most marine stores, Steneston Marine, Nikki, West, etc., but pricey.
If you're as cheap as I am, I just used the pulley that came with my el cheapo Cdn Tire winch, cut one ear off to make it open faced, and made a 'P' connector to link to the boom. An eyebolt through the boom and a quick link to join the block to the eyebolt would accomplish the same thing.
Hope this helps.
