Post Derby Thoughts!!!

some lessons are learned the hard way, not to say you could have done anything different Dan, however I always say you can never have too many bilge pumps! Ive hit a few logs but have always had outboards that "kick up" upon impact. I hit a log on the way home during the 2009 March derby, the outboards kicked up, and away I went. About a week later I was cleaning the boat when I noticed a huge crack in the transom, right where it meets the transom well. I had it repaired and reinforced and it cost me 2500$. And thats with me removing and installing the engines, trim tabs etc... myself. I justified it because I always thought the transom was too light for 500 hp. Will be good now though! If I throw enough time and money at a problem, it eventually goes away[:p]

Being an owner of outboards for most of my life , by any mean , don't think they are bullit proof , being a past apprentice marine mechanic, I have seen a few transoms ripped clean off the back of "Outboard " Boats ,,,, SCARY , nothing shyttier than seeing a salvage boat towing one in , Seen one come in , , with only a hint of a boat behind it ,Fully Submerssed , have those transoms checked out frequently ,also , seen one pulled to the ramp , the motor was still dragging behind the boat on the concrete , was held on by the Steering Cable , UFR ,,, Transom rought is VERY common,,,,..

Again , Glad DOF's situation was handled so well , good on all that helped , good to know we have kindnees of fellow boaters out there, when we really need it .
