Port McNeill/Cardero Channel area...

We could be heading up to the Port McNeill/Malcolm Island area as early as next week... after the long weekend... from Powell River via Stewart Island/Yacultas/Cardero Channel... Basically doing some exploring & hopefully some bottom fishing including halibut... Any tips would be appreciated... also, any recommendations for overnight moorage at "smaller" places, in the Cardero/Loughboro/Malcolm Island area.. other than the larger marinas on the Vancouver Island side?
Any input is appreciated
thanks
Larry

Fished on Saturday, two boats went out, one caught nothing, lost three and the other boat caught a nice chicken and a ~30 lbs ling. Crappy tides,(+14') but the need to go out was strong. Ended up with 16 big dungies for our efforts though.

Fish any where between the Cluxeue R. and the Airport to the north. Find the flats between 100-200'. Lots of good chickens taken off there. Anywhere along the back side of Malcolm produces, again find the flats. The Banks further out get hammered by the commercial guys, so stay away.

As for a place to stay, the gov dock in Sontula is nice and quite. The pub and stores are a bit of a walk though. The dock in McNeill is quite right now, the stores, restraunts and pub are close and the sport goods store is just up the street. There is also Telegraph Cove, which is open and has all the amenities you will need.

If you are up after the 25th, let me know, I will be back from holidays and maybe we can hook up.

Cheers
