Just started prawn fishing in the inlet this summer. What are the half crayfish half prawn looking bugs that I keep bringing up. I can't find anything on the net. Thanks in advance

I believe that you are referring to Squat Lobsters.............

If you've got lots of patience and don't mind a lot of work then their boiled tails are pretty tasty.Cooking and eating prawns is a lot easier though.

I jus been told the squats are below the prawns but I don't do enough of this to call it true.
My .25..... Your mileage may vary

funny thing is they were said to be originally from Spain brought in by freighter & let out with the bildge water i assumed they were only in the Saanich inlet wow have they spread to PORT or are they everywhere? we mostly find them in deeper water over 240'

I can catch them at 140' in the spring when I prawn in Barclay Sound. Not as many the last few years but we used to fill the traps with them on occasion.

were at all depths a couple of weeks ago , 3-5 per trap , Sarita

X2 for Sarita, only in October though, same #s per trap, threw them back, the prawns had more meat on them, and they were not BIG prawns. May have to try them some time to see if they are worth the efforts. Does anyone know if there are any limits on them??

4/day. i believe this came up before and they are a type of crab.

yhup , there you go. The pic helped. definitely not the "bug" iwas thinking of in terms of sand shrimp. That is a member of the crab family

Speaking of Prawns anybody try in the Sooke Area for em with any results? I know u must weigh the traps down more & keep the gear away (any area or depths one skould try?) from are fishn tac . Cheers Sammy
