Does porlier pass have anyfish at this time of year, or is it mainly a summer fishing ground? Also, i was reading somewhere that off porlier inbetwwen the pass and that reef/island on the outside that there is a king crab colony..anybody know anything about that? Thank-ya

To fish or not to fish,
What a stupid question!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will sit on a boat drinking beer for a life time :D

i don't think i would believe that...
from what i understand king crab are a northern species
that would not migrate this far south.
Could be box crab, which are similar in appearance
bot not as big, or as good to eat.

There are fish there all year round , but as E.E. stated in another topic forum why would you fish in an area where the population of the springs is struggling to make a comeback ?
I gave BOJANGLES a description of the fishing and areas to watch for on another post, as for the "King Crabs" never heard of that in 40 years here , but will use it for a few laughs with some of my old fishing buddies.
Take care .

Just got off the blower with Donny MacLeod who has commercial crab fished in and around this area for years and he is of the mind that they are box crab as r.s has stated and that they are located in a small enclave down from Nabob point on the outside of Valdez, not that numerous according to him and not a very good meat if you are of a mind to try and catch them.

River hunter the entire insides been hurting for years now. They made closers the area mostly for the cowichan fish. Things havent looked very good

nedarb .....see "fishing today" on p. 5
Spring fishing severly depressed in this area for at least 8 years, spring and early summer used to be good fishing and then you moved into Stuart channel and down to Sansum narrows , Bold bluff and Seperation point etc for continous fishing, the last Crofton Hotel derby saw 3 fish brought in for 68 boats from Porlier pass to Seperation point and all over the inside waters including Tent Isl, Thetis, and Kuper, the year before was similar.
I believe the escapement for springs in the Cowichan this last year was stated in the paper at less than 300 as of October I think the count was taken.
At one time there was a sizeable coho run in the Bonsall creek and surrounding smaller creeks and they were quite a good size; we fished them right in Crofton harbour in the early and late '80 's , then there was a farm up the Bonsall creek way which continously allowed it's liquid manure to overflow in to the creek and vitually wiped out the coho run over a period of 5 years, the only way it was caught was the F.N. settlement complained of the coliform count ruining their clam beds.

Enough for now .I could go on but it is depressing to remember how the fishing used to be.

One of our local guides fish that area and a place called the cable hole.Does quite well.

thanks the runt

He's most likely running on the outside and down to the south of Porlier around Lone tree point and thereabouts, cable hole is the run of the cable over Galiano to the Saltspring feeder main, don't see too many guides around this way any more.

the cod fishign is awesome, was out there the last rip of the year (end of september) and were were having competitions so see who could go the longest with out gettign a fish! I think 2 mins was are record, half the time we had a bite while the jig was falling! The western entrance to porlier with the reef, and the reef on the outside was where we were fishing, we didnt try the middle reef with the lighthouse as we didnt no the water.

lingcod are closed....

as for rockfish, they all die over 30 feet, trust me im taking this in biology right now at school, those guys are screwed when dragged up from down there, (due to their type of swim bladder, cant adjust fast enough) so catch and release is really not an option.

hate to rain on your parade, but we dont need any more rockfish closures around here...

Oh, i wasn't aware there survival rate was so low on the reef on the outside we were catching them in 5-25' of water, and off the eastern entrance we were fishing 20-45 ft
