I was down in Lambert Channel today scouting herring. I suspect that if the boats you saw were commercial, thats what they were doing also. Fishing for food and bait herring, they want to get them before the roe matures, just like I do for bait and pickled herring. Did you see any seiners making sets? Or were they just sounding for fish?
The bottom of Lambert has some herring glued to the bottom in 300ft. Only a few smaller schools are on the surface being beat up by the birds and sealions. Maybe in a week or two, but middle of Feb the numbers really increase.
But hey!!! I did get a feed of trophy rock sole!
